Position Summary


A core tenet of Reflections treatment philosophy is that addiction is a family disease.  As such, Reflections seeks to impact not only the individual client presenting for treatment, but also the family and social system in which the individual’s difficulties arose and continue to flourish.  The family therapist strives to increase the family and concerned other’s understanding of core addiction and recovery principles, helps them begin to set healthy and sustainable boundaries, and helps families and concerned others develop their own support system and continuing care plan.  The family therapist uses a combination of assessment, psychoeducation, individual therapy, family/couple’s therapy, groups, and experiential activities to achieve these goals.  The family therapist also works individually with each residential client to repair trust and improve his or her relationship functioning.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities


The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:


  • Meet with each client for an initial individual therapy session within 72 hours of admission to build rapport and assess client’s needs
  • Complete an initial contact with family members and/or concerned others within 72 hours of admission at admission (if ROI available) to gather relevant history and assess needs of family
  • Provide summary of findings from these initial contacts and assessments to treatment team for treatment planning purposes
  • Complete at least two individual therapy sessions per week with the client organized around family and relationships issues
  • Complete at least one contact per week with family members and/or concerned others.  The focus of these meetings may vary to include providing psychoeducation, couples/family therapy, reviewing homework assignments, providing progress updates, providing emotional support, answering logistical questions, etc.
  • Assist family members and concerned others in clarifying their own relapse prevention and continuing care plan to support their own ongoing recovery
  • Collaborate with treatment team members to establish an individualized treatment plan for each client per company policy. Update treatment plans as assigned and per company policy
  • Assist in the development of an effective and engaging family program that meets the needs of the organization, clients, family members, and concerned others
  • Coordinate and register family members and concerned others for family program
  • Facilitate Didactic, Process, Experiential, and other groups related to addiction, recovery, family, relationship issues, and mental health topics as assigned
  • Provide regular updates of work with family members and concerned others to Clinical Team and other relevant staff
  • Perform crisis intervention and management as needed or assigned including completing risk assessments (e.g., danger to self or others), de-escalation, and completion of behavioral contracts
  • Complete suicide and violence risk assessment as assigned
  • Participate in treatment team, continuing care planning meetings, and any other assigned staff meetings.  The Family Therapist is expected to participate actively in discussions regarding progress in treatment, areas for further improvement, current treatment recommendations, continuing care recommendations, pass and visitor requests, etc.
  • Contact all potential visitors or persons identified in pass requests to assist with vetting and alerting to visit and pass rules and expectations
  • Participate in daily passdown meetings
  • Maintain comprehensive clinical documentation that meets or exceeds relevant organizational, legal, ethical and accreditation standards
  • Provide clinical coverage for Primary Therapist, Chemical Dependency Counselor, and Clinical Director as needed (i.e., when other staff are on vacation)
  • Provide on-call coverage as assigned by the Clinical Director
  • Provide coverage as Acting Clinical Director when assigned by the Clinical Director
  • Contribute to clinical team discussions regarding appropriate diagnosis.  Provide appropriate diagnoses and treatment recommendations within the scope of one’s licensure and as assigned
  • Communicate with key treatment stakeholders (family, friends, loved ones, referents, other professional treatment providers, etc.) as needed or assigned
  • Demonstrate familiarity with emergency procedures and the location and operation of various emergency equipment
  • Provide in-service training to staff on family, addiction, recovery, mental health, and relationship issues as assigned
  • Attend and/or complete all assigned staff trainings
  • Maintain compliance with all company policies and procedures
  • Maintain valid professional licensure and assigned certifications (e.g., CPR, First Aid)
  • Scheduled hours subject to change based on company needs
  • Participating in activities needed to support the management functions of the team
  • Performing other duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)


  • Masters Degree or higher in Social Work,
  • Marriage and Family Therapy, or Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, or closely related field.  
  • Valid License or license eligible in California
  • A minimum of one year of related experience (family and couples therapy, individual therapy, designing individualized treatment programming; collecting and recording behavioral observations in a treatment setting; developing and implementing behavior management plans)
  • Ability to understand the characteristics of a wide range of intellectual disabilities
  • Must have a strong counseling background, the ability to create and implement functional treatment plans and the ability to build relationships
  • Must have current CPR and First Aid certifications
  • Must have a current negative Tuberculosis results clearance
  • Demonstrated ability in dealing directly with clients

Work involves exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. The use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of force greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for light work.
