What are the responsibilities and job description for the Nursing Assistant position at Livingston County?
This position exists in the County skilled nursing facilities and involves the performance of non-technical tasks involving the routine care of residents and providing such indirect or non-nursing services are not required to be performed by a Licensed Practical or Registered Professional Nurse. Work is subject to general supervision, except activities concerned with actual care of residents, which are performed under direct supervision by the registered nurse in charge. Does related work as required.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge in the care of the elderly and/or infirm as provided in a skilled nursing facility; ability to understand and carry out routine non-technical, oral and written directions relative to care of residents; physical strength and mental alertness; willingness to learn, cooperate and carefully follow a prescribed routine; discretion; ability to get along well with others and to secure cooperation of residents' neatness; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. 1. Certified by the New York State Department of Health as a Residential Health Care Facilities Nurses Aide, or Certified Nurse Aide, or
2. A student in a school of nursing approved by the Commissioner of Education who has successfully completed at least two full semesters and/or 90 contact hours of basic medical/surgical nursing and who shall complete the clinical and written nurse aide competency evaluation/or a graduate of nursing program, waiting results of licensing exam.
Ability to lift and support the body weight of a resident with the prescribed number of assisting devices.
NOTE: Livingston County residency is not a requirement for this position. However, Livingston County residents will be given preference in the hiring process.
Nursing Assistants – NC in the County Service
- Aids in walking, feeding, bathing and related restorative and rehabilitative care activities for residents and aids in caring for their personal needs and comfort;
- Aids residents with personal hygiene by shampooing and combing hair, cleaning and cutting nails, giving mouthwashes, cleaning teeth and dentures;
- Takes temperature, respiration rate, pulse of residents under supervision of the registered nurse in charge;
- Assists professional nursing personnel in carrying out assigned range of motion, promotion of self-help and independence activities and reality orientation;
- Assists residents with meals including feeding residents when necessary;
- Reports record of residents' food intake and output when ordered by the registered nurse in charge;
- Makes beds and changes linen on a regular basis or as otherwise directed;
- Gives residents lotion rubs and assess resident needs and general well being;
- Supplies residents with soap, facial and toilet tissue, towels, washcloths, etc.;
- Labels and stores residents' clothes and turns over valuables to person designated by the facility;
- Fills residents' bedside water pitchers and collects used glasses to be sanitized;
- Assists nursing staff in giving enemas, and applying simple hot packs;
- Cleans and sterilizes equipment by washing and application of antiseptic solution;
- May assist with moving of room furniture, fixtures and supplies to help keep residents safe and comfortable;
- Collects and bags soiled linens and cleans bedpans;
- Assists residents on outside field trips as requested.
