What are the responsibilities and job description for the Welder Fabricator position at Livingston County?
The work involves responsibility for the efficient performance of a wide variety of skilled welding, burning, brazing, heat treating, and machine tasks. Work is performed in the office and in the field. Supervision of others is not a responsibility of this class. The work is performed under the general supervision of the Bridge Construction Supervisor or Shop Manager. A Welder Fabricator does related work as assigned.
Part-time service will be given prorated credit toward experience requirements.
NOTE: Livingston County residency is not a requirement for this position. However, Livingston County residents will be given preference in the hiring process.
- Welds all types of metal using correct rod with gas or electrical equipment;
- Performs welding, cutting, and fabrication in conjunction with the repair, rehabilitation, and construction of bridges, culverts, pipe, drainage structures, and other highway materials;
- Fabricates or repairs truck beds, snow blades, hoppers, catwalks, exhaust systems, and other types of equipment and tools used on highway machinery;
- Does welding repair on a variety of items such as tools, chains, highway machinery, gasoline tanks, and motor castings;
- Reinforces weak spots in machinery;
- Cleans and prepares surfaces to be welded and grinds, files, and finish welds;
- Responsible for ordering welding and cutting materials and supplies for the highway shops, bridges, and other equipment;
- Operates lathe, press, drill press, and other machinery necessary for the fabrication of special projects;
- Performs mechanical repairs on various construction equipment and motor vehicles;
- Operates various medium and heavy construction equipment and commercial motor vehicles; and
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

[1] A Class A commercial motor vehicle driver’s license may be substituted for a Class B commercial motor vehicle driver’s license.
- Applicants with a Class B commercial driver’s license must possess, or obtain within 60 calendar days of appointment, a commercial motor vehicle driver’s license endorsement for tank.
- Applicants appointed with a Class B commercial permit will be required to obtain their commercial motor vehicle driver’s license with an endorsement for tank within 12 months of appointment.
- Applicant must possess, or obtain within 180 calendar days of appointment, N.Y.S.D.O.T. Welding Certification in all positions[2].
- Appropriate licensure, with necessary endorsements, must be maintained throughout employment (NYS Transportation Law § 140 (2)(c)).
- N.Y.S.D.O.T. Welding Certification must be maintained throughout employment.
- A driving record evidencing safe and responsible vehicle operation is required.
- Must authorize and execute any necessary releases to enable the appointing authority to verify licensure and driving history involving violations and/or crimes.
