POSITION SUMMARY:

The Nurse Extern position will prepare the student for the RN/LPN role by:

• Providing opportunity to enhance clinical studies
• Learning to organize and prioritize work
• Developing the skills of communication, collaboration and teamwork

The Nurse Extern will function in the role of C.N.A. and will perform all the normal duties of the C.N.A role.  As opportunities for skill performance presents themselves, the Extern, under the supervision of an RN, will perform those skills and complete any necessary documentation.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES & AUTHORITIES:

The Nurse Extern will follow the KBN Advisory Opinion Statement (AOS #18 Nursing Student), the job description for the position, which is a basic nurse aide job description with the addition of the following:

1. Insert & Remove a foley catheter per order of the LIP.
2. Insert & Remove a nasogastric tube upon the order of the LIP.
3. Assist a LIP with any non-sterile procedure such as physical exams, positioning for procedures, etc.
4. May insert IV infusion devices, and may include withdrawal of blood specimens via phlebotomy.
5. May not administer medications.
6. May not receive verbal orders.
7. Nurse externs may not substitute for licensed nursing staff.
8. Remove peripheral IV needles or saline locks under the direction of the RN.
9. Perform non-sterile oral suction.
10. Provide care to the patient receiving oxygen (may not initiate or regulate oxygen).
11. The Nurse Extern can perform data collection for the RN’s Nursing assessment, which is validated and signed by the RN.
12. Document all activities performed.
13. Can contribute to and document on the Nursing Care Plan with RN SUPERVISION AND VALIDATING SIGNATURE.
14. May give report on patients she/he has been assigned only if the RN is with him/her.
15. Accompanies patient and observes procedures/activities as follows:
    1. Accompany and observe any procedure or activity with the unit staff.
    2. Accompany a non-critical patient to Radiology, Surgery, etc. and observe the procedure with the approval of the receiving departments.
16. Performs C.N.A. duties

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.  The Nurse Extern will perform other duties and projects as assigned.

2.  Attends all mandatory in-services. (Fire, Safety, CPR etc.)

3.  Attends all but 2 Nursing staff meetings per year unless excused by Nursing Administration.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, ABILITIES):

• Must be a student of an accredited school of nursing.
• Must have and maintain a grade point average of 2.75 or above.
• Nurse Externs from an Associate Degree Program must have completed the first two semesters in nursing.
• Nurse Externs from a Baccalaureate Degree Program must have completed their junior level courses in nursing.
• Nurse Externs from an LPN program must have completed the second semester of the LPN Program.
• Must be currently employed at LHHS and have been oriented to the role of Nursing Assistant.

OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, REGISTRATIONS, ETC.)

• Must have a current CPR Certification.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

1. Requires standing and walking for long periods of time.
2. Requires sitting.
3. Requires lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
4. Requires pushing and pulling objects weighing up to 100 pounds.
5. Requires bending and twisting.
6. Requires crawling, squatting and kneeling
7. Requires reaching.
8. Requires fingering, grasping and feeling objects.
9. Requires talking, hearing and seeing.
10. Requires making repetitive motions with the wrists, hands, and fingers.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

1. May require working in confined spaces.
2. Requires working with chemicals.
3. Exposed to moderate levels of noise.
4. Requires working with sharp instruments.
5. Exposed to blood and body fluids
6. Requires wearing gloves, mask, and body and eye protection.
