What are the responsibilities and job description for the Co-Teacher position at Livingston Street Early Childhood Community?
Livingston St is a New York State licensed daycare program. We provide socially responsible care and community for young children and their families.
Livingston Street follows a process-based approach when it comes to childcare. We want children to be practicing skills while in our care - skills like independence, communicating with others, negotiating materials and turn-taking, sharing physical space with others, building connections and culture with peers. Our time together is focused on being engaged in our environment. We use our understanding of childhood development (what actions/experiences/activities children are drawn to, what intrigues them, what do they enjoy, what is fulfilling, what is exciting) to plan the experiences we set up, and to determine how we intervene and interact.
Co-teachers at Livingston Street model what they want to see. We want children to be engaged in their surroundings, so we are too. We want children to get to know their peers, so we get to know them too. We want children to play, investigate, explore, problem-solve…so we do too. Young children are practicing how to be in this world, behavior is their very first and strongest teacher.
We are looking for an individual to join our small team of teachers as Co-Teacher. We would like to find someone who:
- Loves the outdoors (we spend ~5 hours outdoors daily, in all weather, all seasons)
- Is comfortable in a leadership position
- Is a life-long-learner and willing collaborator
- Is able to find humor in challenging situations
- Is comfortable receiving guidance and support from others
- Is playful, energetic and enjoys the company of others
- Is civically minded and dedicated to serving the community
- Is emotionally sensitive, observant, and reflective
- Is interested in language, sensory, and cognitive development in early childhood
Responsibilities:
As co-teacher, you will be expected to collaborate closely with your teaching team to facilitate meaningful experiences for the children in your care. This process includes:
- Communicating clearly with your co-teacher regarding what experiences will be set-up and delegating responsibilities
- Learning about and understanding the Livingston Street pedagogy and practices
- Observing the children in your care and responding to their behavior accordingly
- Asking questions and learning from other teachers with respect and open-mindedness
- Getting to know the individuals - children, parents, colleagues - in our community and building meaningful, genuine relationships, including participation in community events
- Daily custodial duties such as cleaning, meal prep, organizing, etc
New York State requires 15 hours of training each year plus bi-annual CPR and First-Aid certification.
Qualifications:
Over the years Livingston Street has found that some of our best teachers are artist, writers and adventurers, so please even if you don't have the traditional qualifications.
