School Custodian
Primary Responsibilities
1 Confers with supervisor regarding care, safety, protection, and cleaning.
2 Sets up rooms for special events and needs.
3 Reports needed repair work to proper authorities.
4 Performs minor repairs and adjustments of building fixtures and equipment.
5 Checks heat and lighting fixtures in assigned rooms.
6 Sweeps, scrubs, mops, waxes, and refinishes floors, washes windows, cleans walls, furniture, woodwork, and other equipment.
7 Cares for the yard and playground.
8 Performs miscellaneous maintenance work as directed, particularly when school is not in session. May be required to operate a truck or tractor.
9 Other duties as assigned to maintain the efficient operation of the MOT Department.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
These items shall be done in each classroom and/or washroom.
1 Daily – Classroom
- Empty wastebaskets and dust them.
- Sweep the floor clean………………………………………………...7 minutes
- Dust window ledges.
- Dust desks, or tables and chairs……………………………………...5 minutes
- Wash the sinks and clean mirrors
- Check soap and towel dispenser……………………………………...4 minutes
7. Sweep corridor.
2 Daily – Washroom
1. Check all towel, soap and toilet tissue. (fill if needed)
2. Scour basins………………………………………………………………17 minutes
3. Sweep or mop floor.
4. Clean hardware, disinfect toilet seats.
3 Classroom weekly (Some monthly)
- Venetian blinds (dust with treated mop or vacuum.)
- Upper ledges (dust with treated mop or vacuum)
- Dust lights.
- Clean chalkboards…………………………………………………..24 minutes - week
- Dust windows and frames, door closer, clock,………5 minutes per day, Maps, rails, etc….
4 Washroom Weekly
1. Mop and disinfect.
2. Clean mineral rings.
Position Requirements
1 Completion of the high school diploma or equivalent.
2 Ability to complete and pass a district approved weight-endurance physical test.
3 One year experience in custodial or grounds maintenance work.
4 Knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in custodial work; requirements for maintaining school buildings and grounds in a safe, clean, and orderly condition.
5 Able to use cleaning materials and equipment with skill and efficiency.
6 Able to use basic tools for minor repairs.
7 Knowledge of operating heating and ventilating equipment.
8 Perform heavy physical labor, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces.
9 Able to lift/carry and transport 10 to 60 pounds and on occasion 81 pounds.
10 Read and recognize cleaning chemical labels.
11 Properly select, mix and apply cleaning agents appropriate to the task.
12 Able to perform manual labor; follow verbal and written directions and work cooperatively with others.
