Project Development Engineer

Responsibilities
- Cost Estimation: Develop comprehensive cost estimates for utility-scale solar projects, considering factors such as equipment, materials, labor, overheads, and contingencies.
- Bid Preparation: Collaborate with the team to prepare competitive bids, proposals and RFP s for solar energy projects, ensuring accuracy and feasibility.
- Risk Assessment: Identify and evaluate potential risks and uncertainties associated with project execution, including market dynamics, regulatory requirements, supply chain disruptions, and technological advancements.
- Value Engineering: Utilize value engineering principles to optimize project costs while maintaining quality and performance standards.
- Vendor Management: Liaise with suppliers, subcontractors, and service providers to obtain accurate pricing information, negotiate favorable terms, and establish strong working relationships.
- Cost Analysis: Thoroughly analyze and benchmark project costs against industry standards, historical data, and market trends to identify areas for cost reduction and process improvement.
- Documentation: Prepare detailed cost breakdowns, reports, and documentation to support project planning, budgeting, and financing activities.
- Continuous Improvement: Stay updated on emerging technologies, industry best practices, and regulatory developments in the solar energy sector to enhance estimating methodologies and stay ahead of market trends.
- Team Leadership: Provide mentorship, guidance, and technical expertise to to the team fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and excellence.
Interconnection/Permitting
- Preparing Bid Docs and responses to RFP's and RFQ's to customers.
- Prepare Permitting and Deliver Permitting Applications for AHJ s
- Attend Town Hall meetings to secure permits or variances while educating board members on the project s goals and benefit
- Create, track, and manage all interconnection applications for various projects
- Manage utilities customer portal system daily.
- Research utility infrastructure to inform projects on interconnection options.
- Assist and prepare incentive applications for projects.
- Lead technical discussions and negotiations with utilities and ISOs to make interconnection cost effective and timely.
- Coordinate with internal teams and processes for making payments on interconnection applications, upgrades, and system impact studies.
- Inform other technical and non-technical teams on interconnection specifications.
- Attend interconnection policy working group/lobbyist meetings
Qualifications
- Degree in Engineering, Electrical Systems, Power Systems or similar
- Knowledge of electrical power concepts and power systems analysis, especially utility scale power systems
- Understand solar and storage project electrical components, including batteries, balance of systems, inverters, and transformers.
- Understand solar and storage project single line diagrams and layouts.
- Understand utility infrastructure and interconnection processes.
- Minimum of 3 years of professional experience managing the interconnection process and coordinating with utilities.
- Understand implications of Project Development and Project Engineering on interconnection aspects
- Experience with electrical diagrams at 480V and above
- Experience with AutoCAD (to edit/draft site plans and one-line diagrams)
- Previous role with an electrical engineering company, or an electric utility in their engineering, Distributed Energy Resource, or Distributed Generation departments preferred.
- Strong written & oral communication skills
- At least 2 years of experience working with a utility or solar developer required.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret technical specifications, construction drawings, and contractual documents..
- Minimum of 4 years of experience in cost estimation, project management, or engineering, with at least 3 years focused on utility-scale solar projects.
- Detail-oriented mindset with a proactive approach to problem-solving and decision-making.
- Must be able to meet strict deadlines while managing and prioritizing task lists.
