BASIC FUNCTION :
Assist a bus driver in maintaining order; attend to the needs and safety of handicapped students being transported to and from school.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES :
Individual positions may not perform all of the duties listed nor do these examples include all responsibilities of positions in this class.
Assist the bus driver in pupil management. E
Assist in loading and unloading special education students; strap wheelchairs in van for severely handicapped students; lift and secure handicapped students into bus seats; fasten harnesses and belts. E
Move about the bus to attend to students' needs and quiet disturbances. E
Respond to medical emergencies and keep students clean when accidents occur. E
Collect and turn over to the school secretary those personal items left on the bus by students. E
Make certain that unauthorized persons do not ride bus. E
Operate wheelchair lift on wheelchair bus. E
Perform related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES :
KNOWLEDGE OF :

First aid and CPR practices and procedures.
Behavior management techniques.
ABILITY TO :
Understand and relate to the needs and behavior of exceptional children.
Maintain order among children on a school bus.
Learn procedures for handling wheelchairs on buses.
Remain calm in stressful situations.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Work cooperatively with others.
Lift handicapped students into bus seats.
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE :
Any combination equivalent to : high school diploma or equivalent or sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS :
Valid First Aid and CPR Certificate issued by an authorized agency.
WORKING CONDITIONS : ENVIRONMENT :
Bus environment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS :
Lifting heavy children and wheelchairs.
Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate wheelchairs and fasten children with seat belts and harnesses.
Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching to assist students.
Sitting for extended periods of time.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS :
The following MUST BE ATTACHED to application :
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Associate's Degree or Bachelor's Degree or Higher Education Degree
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS / CERTIFICATES :
Valid First Aid and CPR certificate issued by an authorized agency (required if hired). If selected for the position, out-of-district applicants must be T.B. tested and fingerprinted. A practical skills test may be administered at the time of interview.
