Description :

The Logan City Fire Department (LCFD) hereby announces a promotional examination for the purpose of establishing a hiring roster of eligible candidates for the position of Driver Engineer. The Driver Engineer drives and operates emergency medical response and fire suppression apparatus / equipment, including engines and aerial platforms.

Testing will be held Tuesday, April 15 and Wednesday, April 16, 2025 .

Qualifications :

Candidates must meet the following qualifications / certifications -

• Two (2) years of service with LCFD to be eligible to test.
• Four (4) years of service with LCFD during the life of the test in order to promote.
• Pass a competitive examination in accordance with Civil Service Rules and Regulations.
• Apparatus Driver Operator (ADO) certification (or currently enrolled).
• ADO Aerial certification (within one year of promotion).
• Firefighter II certification.
• EMT Advanced or Paramedic certification.
• Pass the Wildland Pack Test annually.
• Valid driver's license.

Desirable qualifications and certifications include Fire Officer I, Fire Instructor I, Haz Mat Awareness, Technical Rescue Certifications, and Officer Development Program (ODP), Bachelor's or Associate's Degree in Fire Science or related area.

COMPENSATION

All City employees are paid within a salary range based on a statewide market study. Annual merit increases are based upon personal performance on goals established by the employees, immediate supervisor, and Human Resource Department, as funds are appropriated by the Municipal Council.

EXAMINATION

The examination process will be divided into five phases over a two-day period (three days if required), scheduled for Tuesday, April 15, 2025 & Wednesday, April 16, 2025 . Any applicant who fails (less than 70%) a portion of the examination process will be withdrawn from consideration. Prior to the testing days, a schedule will be released to all candidates with assigned time slots and details associated with each testing phase.

Phase 1 : Written Test - this section of the promotional examination process will be rated at 20% of the composite score .

Phase 2 : Pre-Trip Inspection and Open Road Test - this section of the promotional examination process will be rated at 20% of the composite score .

Phase 3 : Closed Course Driving - this section of the promotional examination process will be rated at 10% of the composite score .

Phase 4 : Pumping Skills - this section of the promotional examination process will be rated at 25% of the composite score .

Phase 5 : Oral Interview - this section of the promotional examination process will be rated at 15% of the composite score .

Education, years of service, and certifications will be reviewed and scored. This section of the promotional examination process will be rated at 10% of the composite score .

Responsibilities :

Responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to :

Driving emergency medical response vehicle and / or firefighting apparatus to alarm scene.

Operating various types of vehicles, equipment, tools and apparatus in response to fire and emergency incidents; driving equipped and manned vehicles to scene of emergency along pre-determined route, ensuring safe movement and minimal response time; positioning vehicle properly in relation to fire hydrants and fire location.

Operating pump, aerial ladder and other required equipment; regulating pressure of water and other fire suppression agents through equipment.

Inspecting and maintaining assigned apparatus / equipment / vehicle, including identifying maintenance and repairs needed, performing minor / routine maintenance and repairs, and / or requesting major repairs be performed, and completing records of daily vehicle checks and inventories.

Participating in a variety of training activities to maintain / improve level of fire suppression / emergency medical skills and physical conditioning.

Performing a variety of emergency rescue activities at fire, accident, or other emergency scenes; administering first aid (if AEMT) or emergency rescue activities (if Paramedic) at fire, accident, and other emergency / rescue scenes.

Performing a variety of cleaning, maintenance, and minor repair tasks necessary to keep the fire station and related equipment clean, stored properly, and fully functional.

Performing fire safety inspections of businesses, manufacturing / industrial facilities, and other commercial / public facilities to identify fire hazards, potential / actual fire code violations, and to verify locations of hazardous materials.

Conducting classes and talking with school groups and other City residents to explain medical related topics, fire safety, fire prevention practices and techniques, and educating them about the functions of the Logan City Fire Department.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :

Knowledge of fire suppression principles, methods, techniques, and practices.

Knowledge of operating techniques, purpose, and use of various tools, equipment, vehicles, and apparatus used in fire suppression, rescue, and medical assistance operations.

Knowledge of and ability to apply first aid, CPR, and other basic emergency medical assistance techniques.

Knowledge of the City of Logan fire safety codes and ordinances.

Knowledge of the street names and locations in Zone 7, Zone 12, and Cache County.

Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with business owners / managers, other staff, and the public.

Skill in following complex oral and written instructions, procedures, and guidelines.

Skill in communicating using standard telephone and two-way radio equipment.

Skill in safely and effectively operating a full range of fire suppression / emergency response, apparatus and equipment.
