SUMMARY: Assists the Maintenance/Grounds Crew Supervisor in all aspects of grounds maintenance, including mowing grass, snow removal, planting, pruning, and trimming, watering, and fertilizing plants, as well as having a general knowledge of horticulture and plant species.

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Should have experience with all types of grounds equipment and a basic knowledge of how to plant, care for, water, prune and control disease of plant materials. Should be willing to learn and execute new or miscellaneous grounds care jobs. Possess the capability to comprehend and execute instructions effectively. Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables.

Other Qualifications: Ability to work overtime occasionally, including weekends.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. These activities are all required to operate all equipment, hold a shovel and dig a hole, lift plants and plant in ground, climb and trim trees, etc. The employee is occasionally required to sit and talk or hear to meet with supervisor and listen to instructions. The employee must frequently lift and/or move equipment, trees and plants weighing up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision in order to plant seeds and see equipment controls, distance vision to survey landscaping areas and drive tractors, color vision to color coordinate planting of flowers, peripheral vision and depth perception for safety reasons when operating equipment and driving tractors.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions while working outdoors. Must work near moving mechanical parts while operating tree trimming and other equipment. Must work in high, precarious places while trimming trees. Exposure to gas fumes or airborne particles when mowing and operating tree-trimming equipment and toxic or caustic weed and bug killing chemicals when tending plants. Exposure to outside weather conditions during all seasons – planting, mowing, trimming in warm weather, and snow shoveling in cold weather. The employee is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock and vibration when using various kind of equipment. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud when using mowing and trimming equipment.
