Job Summary

The Marine Education Specialist supports a wide variety of ocean-centered educational programming offered as part of Loggerhead Marinelife Center (LMC)’s education portfolio. Primary responsibilities include the facilitation and operational support of educational events and programs held on campus and in the community. This individual is responsible for delivering high-quality, engaging marine science and conservation education and empowering program participants and LMC visitors to take an active role in ocean conservation action. Core Responsibilities

  • Facilitates high-quality, engaging marine science and conservation education to youth, adults and multigenerational groups at LMC, Juno Beach Pier, community centers and at community events.
  • Serves as primary educator during LMC party programs, Discovery Shows and volunteer service group activities.
  • Prepares and facilitates before and after-hours education programming such as Kids Night Out, tours and special events.
  • Assists Department staff in the coordination of education event and campus program schedules, activities, lessons.
  • Facilitates set-up and activities at community outreach events.
  • Provides training support and instruction for volunteer staff assisting with program facilitation.
  • Assists in the coordination and facilitation of seasonal camps.
  • Provides support to Education team to track inventory and expenses for Department programs.
  • Maintains high visibility throughout LMC’s campus and maintains a strong focus on engaging with visitors when not facilitating guided programs.
  • Represents LMC with the upmost integrity, exemplifying values of the organization.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Required Skills, Knowledge, and Experience

  • Self-motivated; passionate about ocean health and the importance of scientific communication
  • Possess a bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline or a minimum of two (2) years of relevant professional experience leading environmental education programs.
  • Thrive in a highly visible, learner-facing environment, including virtual, indoor and outdoor spaces; Comfortable and experienced with speaking on camera and to a live virtual audience of all ages.
  • Demonstrated excellence in communication (written, oral, and public) and understanding of marine science and conservation principles.
  • Available and willing to work frequent evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Knowledge of Florida’s coastal ecosystems and current ocean conservation topics is essential.

The Center has grown to become a global leader in the rehabilitation, research, and protection of sea turtles, serving our broader mission to promote ocean ecosystem conservation and train future generations to do the same. Annually we reach 900,000 guests with our transformational STEM education programs and partner with nearly 200 organizations across six continents and 16 countries in ocean conservation. In late 2021, we will open our new 27,500 square-foot campus expanding our exhibition, education, convening space, and medical facilities and increasing our regional economic impact.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand and walk. The employee is frequently required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. This position may involve working outdoors in Florida, often in hot and humid conditions, and at events that extend into evening and weekend hours. Must be willing and able to travel for offsite programming and possess a valid driver’s license.


Notes 

This is an hourly, non-exempt position. The successful incumbent may be required to perform tasks beyond the scope of this job description as requested by the supervisor. This recruitment may be used to select candidates for additional open positions. It is our policy that all team members, including newly hired, transferred, and promoted team members, will be carefully monitored and evaluated for an initial introductory 3-month period on the job. After satisfactory completion of the introductory evaluation, such team members will be evaluated on an annual basis.
