Job Summary: Lead Programmers collaborate with customers and internal team members to execute control system development on schedule, based on a thorough understanding of mechanical and electrical technical specifications. They are capable of working highly independently, working on longer term projects with little or no supervision, conducting testing, troubleshooting, and collaborating with technical or non-technical colleagues through project execution as needed. The individual in this role will interact with all phases of the New Product Development (NPD) lifecycle including up front design definition, supporting production builds, creating BOM’s and drawings, as well as supporting new products in the field with technical support as needed.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: include the following: (Other duties may be assigned)
- Develop original code from the ground up in structured text and/or ladder logic to control equipment used in automated material handling solutions
- Program HMIs and PLCs to accomplish specific material handling automation project objectives
- Design and document company products using systems such as AutoCAD Electrical, EPlan, Studio 5000, and more
- Create and/or guide other technical team members in authoring owner’s manuals, test procedures, and other engineering deliverables as required
- Maintain and update project documentation, including design specifications, progress reports, and technical deliverables
- Partner with cross functional peers to conduct prototype testing and development
- Ensures accuracy and completeness of engineering deliverables from self and other technical peers
- Able to check the work of other technical team members
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- This role has no direct reporting responsibilities
- Provides technical guidance and work distribution for engineering team on site and/or in India
- Provides regular technical leadership in guiding cross functional peers through portions of the NPD process
- Frequently tasked with checking the technical work of other team members
Qualifications and Skill Requirements:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in PLC programming (multiple systems, but AB is primary), HMI configurations, and SCADA systems
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in C or other similar structured text environments
- Highly proficient with years of experience in creating, reading, and interpreting electrical schematics
- Highly proficient with years of experience in Controls and Electrical Engineering fundamentals
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to identify and address project issues proactively.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with clients, team members, and stakeholders.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Familiarity with package sortation, unit handling conveyor, or other related products and its associated control systems preferred.
- Proficient in NEC, Electrical Standards for Industrial Machinery, and UL regulatory compliance
- Ability to maintain positive and professional working relationships with all staff at all levels/functions of organization
- Ability to solve department level problems and drive continuous improvement initiatives with peer review
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Control Systems Engineering, or related field.
- 5-10 years of experience in mechanical, electrical or control systems engineering, with a proven track record in managing project schedules, scope, and change orders.
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical/electrical schematics and customer specifications. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external customers using English.
- Excellent math skills are required. Individuals in this position must be able to perform engineering calculations employing algebra, geometry, and trigonometry as required.
- Proficient with Auto CAD Electrical and/or E-Plan
- Proficient with Rockwell Studio 5000
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel
Physical Demands:
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk and sit. Employee spends time on shop floor, which could be significant portions of the day at times and require lifting up to 50 lbs. This role also requires spending time sitting in front of a computer.
Travel Demands:
- This position may require occasional travel to customer sites, often with little notice, including weekends and holidays in some cases.
Work Environment:
- The employee works in the office but does have frequent interaction with personnel on the shop floor. Typical workdays are split between the two environments but can sometimes be skewed heavily towards one or the other depending on work content at any given time. The employee may also be required to travel occasionally to work in customers’ plants or at suppliers. In plants, the employee is exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is mixed but does not require hearing protection in most areas. This position is on site in Port Clinton, OH.
