Job Summary: The Charge Nurse-PeriAnesthesia, is a highly skilled registered nurse (RN) with advanced knowledge in procedural and perianesthesia nursing in a Magnet Designated academic Children's Hospital with level one trauma designation. Works closely with the nursing leadership team and utilizes skilled discretion and independent judgment to oversee and supervise a team of licensed and unlicensed staff who provide direct and indirect age-specific patient care for a diverse outpatient and inpatient population in a fast-paced environment. Coordinates shift activities based on the needs of the patient population served, established professional practice model (Duffy's Quality-Caring Model), applicable regulatory standards and requirements, and approved clinical practice standards, policies and procedures. Makes assignments based on staff competency, patient acuity, relevant infection control and safety issues, staffing criteria and productivity standards. Assigns and re-assigns staff and workloads to provide uninterrupted, cost effective patient care and patient flow with optimum productivity. Functions within the expectations of a highly proficient professional nurse and meets nursing excellence standards to maintain Magnet Recognition as outlined by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Promotes the empowerment of the nursing profession and excels in implementing new knowledge, innovations and improvements in practice to enhance the patient experience and clinical outcomes. Provides direct age-specific and developmentally appropriate patient care as needed. Performs the nursing process (assessment, care planning, intervention, evaluation) independently. Serves as a role model in patient care delivery methods and consistently demonstrates an advanced level of clinical practice, communication and documentation. Applies theoretical concepts to clinical practice and exhibits self-motivation to continually expand knowledge base and clinical skills with a focus in procedural and perianesthesia nursing. Facilitates a positive environment and provides hands-on guidance to engage staff in adopting a care delivery model of accountability, empowerment and excellence in practice. Meets qualifications, licensure, certifications and competencies as defined in the department-specific Plan for Providing Care. Performs other duties as needed. Education and Experience: Bachelor of Science Degree in nursing required if hired after October 1, 2020. If hired prior to October 1, 2020, Bachelor's degree may be in progress, or, an Associate's Degree in nursing with a Bachelor's degree in another field and a Master's Degree in nursing required. Minimum of three years nursing experience in procedural, critical care nursing, or perianesthesia nursing required. Minimum of one year of prior management or supervisory experience preferred. Basic Arrhythmia Recognition and Treatment (BART) or equivalent course required Knowledge and Skills: In-depth knowledge of procedural, critical care and perianesthesia nursing required. Thorough knowledge of healthcare regulations and survey process required. Proficiency in leadership and communications skills required. Exhibits professional behavior at all times. Ability to apply theoretical concepts to clinical practice and continually expands knowledge base and clinical skills with a focus in procedural, critical care, perianesthesia nursing. Able to read and write legibly in English (and Spanish preferred) with professional quality; use computer, printer and software programs necessary to the position, e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, electronic medical record, electronic event reporting program; troubleshoot and calibrate patient care equipment; perform technical patient care activities; relate and communicate positively, effectively and professionally with others; be assertive and consistent in following and enforcing policies; work calmly and respond courteously when under pressure; lead, supervise, teach and collaborate; accept direction; think critically; work independently with minimal supervision; perform basic math and statistical functions; manage multiple assignments effectively; organize and prioritize workload; problem solve; recall information with accuracy; pay close attention to detail; distinguish colors and smells as necessary for patient care; hear sufficiently for general conversation in person and on the telephone; identify and distinguish various sounds associated with the work place and patient care; see adequately to read computer screens, medical records and written documents necessary to position; discern temperature variances through touch. Licensures and Certifications: Active California Registered Nurse (RN) license required. Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification issued by the American Heart Association required.
