Job Description
Job Summary: The Emergency Medical Technician functions in a large tertiary academic medical center comprised of multiple hospitals and ambulatory sites licensed under Loma Linda University Health (LLUH) with level one trauma designation, ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) receiving center designation, Comprehensive Stroke Center and Chest Pain Center accreditation. Functions in a fast-paced environment under the supervision of a registered nurse supporting a patient-centered care model of practice. Provides designated direct and indirect age-specific and developmentally appropriate patient care in a mobile environment during transport of patients between facilities licensed under LLUH. Operates medical transport vehicle following safety regulations and maintains access to licensed caregivers via mobile telephone during transport. Recognizes signs and symptoms of patients at risk for potential complications and/or adverse reactions to care and responds appropriately within scope of practice. Seeks information and clarification of duties as necessary. Utilizes effective interpersonal skills to maximize excellence in customer service, safe patient care and professionalism. Contributes to a work environment of caring and cooperation among a culturally diverse workforce and patient population. Participates in on-call schedule as required by business needs of the department. Performs other duties as needed. Education and Experience: High School Diploma or equivalent required. Completion of an approved Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic course required. Minimum of one year experience as an EMT or Paramedic transport required. Knowledge and Skills: Demonstrates competencies in fundamentals of patient care and knowledge of scope of practice for EMT in a licensed healthcare facility. Able to read, write legibly and speak in English (and Spanish preferred) with professional quality; use computer, printer and software programs necessary to the position, e.g., Word, Outlook, established electronic medical record; troubleshoot patient care equipment; perform basic patient care activities within scope of practice and organizational policies and procedures; comprehend and follow-through with instructions; relate and communicate positively, effectively and professionally with others; be assertive and consistent in following and/or enforcing policies; work calmly and respond courteously when under pressure; collaborate; accept direction; think critically and use good judgment; work independently with minimal supervision; perform basic math functions; compose written material; manage multiple assignments effectively; organize and prioritize workload; problem solve; recall information with accuracy; pay close attention to detail; distinguish colors and smells as necessary for patient care; hear sufficiently for general conversation in person and on the telephone; identify and distinguish various sounds associated with the work place and patient care; see adequately to read computer screens, medical records and written documents necessary to position; discern temperature variances through touch. Licensures and Certifications: Active California Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic license required. Basic Life Support certification issued by the American Heart Association required. California Driver's license and automobile insurance required upon hire.
