Salary Range: $55.80 - $76.93

Pay rates are determined based on experience and internal equity.

Position Summary:

  • This position reports to the Director of Department or CNO as relevant.
  • Responsible for nursing care of patients in the LVMC Critical Care Department.
  • Coordinates activities that support all aspects of patient care in that department.
  • Works with other directors and staff to develop a fiscally sound budget that meets patient needs, staffing criteria and the LVMC’s goals.
  • Monitors the budget and can explain variances.
  • Works with other directors and all hospital departments and staff to assure coordinated approaches to quality patient care. 
  • Demonstrates quality and effectiveness in work habits and clinical practice.
  • Remains flexible to changing systems.
  • Treats patients, families, visitors, peers and physicians with consideration and respect.
  • Works well under stress or with tight deadlines. 
  • Supervises/delegates nursing care given by nursing staff, assistive personnel, and students.  Supervises staff members during shift and directs unit nursing personnel.  Provides input regarding staff performance.
  • Assigns responsibility for completion of specific shift duties to appropriate nursing personnel.
  • Re-evaluates patient care as patient/unit conditions change. 
  • Assesses options and takes appropriate course of action in over- and under-staffed conditions.
  • Documents all cases of misconduct and intervenes as appropriate. 
  • Demonstrates quality and effectiveness in work habits and clinical practice.
  • Remains flexible to changing systems.
  • Treats patients, families, visitors, peers and physicians with consideration and respect.
  • Communicates concerns appropriately using the established chain of command.
  • Must work well with supervisors, co-workers, patients, family members and visitors.
  • Nurse Manager will take patients with an overall lower acuity in addition to being in charge if there is a call-in or unit census has changed.
  • Ensures patient care coverage is maintained during those times when staff leave the unit for breaks/meals.

  • Follows guidelines and practices identified in the LVMC Employee Handbook. 
  • Is a leader in continuous quality improvement activities within the Critical Care Department and LVMC.
  • Participates in the development of skills criteria annually and as needed.
  • Complies with annual PPD testing.
  • Maintains responsibility for own professional development.
  • Assesses own performance using insight and constructive feedback to set goals and to enrich knowledge and skills to perform role.

 

Position Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Is fluent in Standards of Practice for Critical Care Nursing and assures that they are followed.
  • Is knowledgeable of Joint Commission standards, Title 22, CMS regulations and any other federal or state guidelines that impact patient care in the Critical Care Department and disperses that information to staff appropriately. 
  • Monitors nursing practice to assure all guidelines are met.
  • Works with Human Resources to develop marketing plans to attract nursing staff to the department.
  • Provides support and guidance for staff and is responsible for sharing information appropriately.
  • Monitors orientation of staff in the Critical Care Department to assure adequate training and support are provided.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and the skills necessary to monitor care to assure that it is appropriate to the age of the patients served.

Essential Functions:

  • Maintains nursing license following the Scope of Practice for Registered Nursing.
  • Ensures that all licensure requirements/credentials/certificates for applicable personnel are valid and current.
  • Demonstrates the ability to function as a team member.
  • Conducts department meetings and dispenses information appropriately.
  • Demonstrates the ability to have positive personal interactions with staff, patients, visitors and physician’s.
  • Ensures adequate staffing to meet the department’s function and purpose.
  • Maintain a positive work environment for staff and physicians.
  • Promotes team efforts.
  • Communicates openly and honestly in written and verbal format.
  • Accepts appropriate supervision.
  • Communicates concerns appropriately using the established chain of command.

Position Qualifications:

  • Education: Current California license as an RN.  Bachelor or Master’s of Science degree in Nursing (BSN) is preferred.
  • Experience: At least 3 years clinical critical care experience with demonstrated leadership abilities.
  • Certifications: BLS, ACLS and PALS certification required.  CCRN preferred.
  • Skills/Ability: Excellent clinical skills.  Excellent verbal and written communication skills.  Computer skills required.  Exhibits the ability to organize work assignments and follow through with accuracy.  Exercises good judgment, demonstrates initiative, emotional stability, tact and poise.
  • LVMC reserves the right to modify the minimum requirements depending on the needs of the organization.
