PURPOSE AND SCOPE:
The Director, Advising and Counseling is responsible for providing leadership and oversight for the Department of Academic Advising and Disability Services at Lone Star College. The position oversees functions related to academic advising, including the successful implementation of a case-management approach to first year and second year students.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Oversee the administration of advising services to students and community, including services for specific populations such as Veterans and Exceptional Admissions & International students, ensuring that services are aligned with the mission and goals of the college
- Analyze the effectiveness of ongoing services and oversee committees to develop strategies to improve processes and procedures
- Regularly assess student needs and interests by evaluating current programming and making updates and improvements as needed. Remain current on all curriculum changes regarding academic planning as well as best practices in the field of Academic Advising and Retention
- Oversee the departmental budgets for the Academic Advising, Records, and Retention departments
- Supervise the hiring and training of full and part-time employees. Ensure professional development of employees within the department
- Participate in system-wide planning committees including but not limited to Student Success Course Committee, Advising & Registration Committee, Organizational Development Advisory council, 20/20 cultural steering committee, Advising Council, and Probation & Suspension task force
- Oversee the processes and functions of Disabilities Services
- Perform research analysis and reporting functions. Prepare and present information and updates to a variety of internal and external constituents. Collaborate with multiple LSC departments to ensure accuracy of information given to key constituents
- Collaborate with faculty and staff in the promotion of the colleges' programs to students and community as needed. Assist with various programs including but not limited to student recruitment and orientation
- Develop internal operational processes ensuring that resources are effectively allocated, and staff and student needs are addressed
- Meet with students when referred to discuss any registration concerns such as being dropped in error for non-payment
- Serve on various campus and LSC- System committees and partake in a variety of meetings and conferences
- Provide workshops on suicide prevention and overall wellness/stress relief. Provide mindfulness workshop for incoming nursing students to prevent burnout
- Develop and supervise program areas of Veteran Advising, International Advising, Early Alert, Completion Advising, Records and transcripts, Graduation, Probation and suspension student interventions, Advising and Records front desk check in, and FTIC/EDUC 1300 cohort advising
- Develop goals and objectives for areas of supervision and provide assistance to the Dean of Student Services in the area of long-range planning
- Responsible for other reasonable related duties as assigned

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items, such as papers, books, or small parts; or driving an automobile. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.
WORK SCHEDULE AND CONDITIONS:
- Equipment used includes, PC workstation running on a LAN in a Microsoft Windows environment, calculator, phone and other general office equipment
- Interface with internal and external contacts as needed to carry out the functions of the position
- Work is performed in a climate-controlled office with minimal exposure to safety hazards
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree and at least 5 years of related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Experience must include at least 3 years in a manager- or director-level position
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master's degree
Hiring salary range is $77,356 - $88,959.
Lone Star College provides a hiring salary range for all posted full-time non-faculty positions. Where your salary offer would fall in that range is determined by your related experience and education.
