Basic Function And Scope Of Responsibilities

Advises pre-pharmacy students who are enrolled in the first and second professional year of the pharmacy program at LIU on all academic and non-academic matters. The primary goal of the pre-pharmacy advisor is to successfully advance recruitment, retention, and successful matriculation into the professional phase of the pharmacy program. Works closely with pharmacy advisors. Reports to the Assistant Dean for Admissions.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Advise students enrolled in the pre-professional phase of the program on all academic matters, including registration.
  • Provide assistance for students experiencing personal issues affecting academic performance.
  • Communicate with students on matters of progression, probation, dismissal and other program policies.
  • Assists in the facilitation and presentation of academic support workshops.
  • Advise and track students’ community service and personal & professional development.
  • Participates in regularly scheduled Open Houses.
  • Communicates with students regarding admissions standards and requirements into the professional phase of the pharmacy program.
  • Serve as a member of college, campus and university committees as required.
  • Assist with student professional clubs/organizations programs to advise on career goals and opportunities.
  • Communicate with various departments, faculty and staff to gather and deliver information to students.
  • Communicate with LIU Pharmacy faculty and staff to create research and educational opportunities for pre-pharmacy students to increase enrollment and retention.
  • Provide information about financial aid and scholarships.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Assistant Dean for Admissions.

Education

Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in higher education or related discipline preferred.

Training, Skills, Knowledge

Highly desirable to have applicants that have prior advising experience in the postsecondary environment or health professions programs; exceptional interpersonal organization, communications (both written and verbal) and critical thinking skills; highly proficient with computers (MS Office and/or Mac products, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook and/or Pages, Keynote, and Numbers), knowledge of PeopleSoft (preferred), and utilize various applications, including running reports, spreadsheets, and mail merges; consistently carry out tasks in a highly organized manner; participate as a highly motivated team player and maintain competencies through participation in professional development programs; ability to maintain confidentiality pertaining to student information; ability to function in a detail oriented, time-sensitive environment.
