REPORTS TO: Building Principal and Director of Special Education
JOB DESCRIPTION: Special Educator for our High School Life Skills Program to provide students with academic instruction, daily living skills, , and pre-vocational training. The educator will work to foster independence and prepare students for post-secondary opportunities.
Teacher for moderate to intensive needs classroom
Programming will focuses on:

Health and Wellness

Time Management and Organization
Technology Skills
Independent Living Skills
Civic and Social Responsibilities
Emotional Intelligence and Self-Awareness.

Goal Setting and Decision Making
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following: Other duties may be assigned.
1.PROFESSIONAL KNOWLEDGE
Continuously improve professional knowledge and practice through appropriate professional development activities; share information and knowledge with other teachers; apply the best research in the design and development of school curriculum.
Maintain and incorporate the best research in instructional materials and techniques.
Attend annual IEP meetings, monitor progress toward identified goals and write IEP goals
2. PLANNING FOR INSTRUCTION
Set short-term and year-long goals for curricular units based on sound principles and practices of learning.
Develop and maintain lesson plans based on short-term and year-long goals and share when appropriate.
Work with families to support students
3.USE OF MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT
Integrate current technologies as tools to enhance instructional strategies and increase student learning.
4.EFFECTIVENESS OF INSTRUCTION
Promote a high level of active learning through setting high standards and clear goals and modifying instruction to help all students achieve those standards.
Maintain systems of assessment and measurements which reflect progress in achieving instructional objectives.
5.LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
Establish an atmosphere that encourages sensitivity and respect among students and with the teacher, and practices and routines which create an appropriate learning environment.
Design instructional experiences in which students achieve high standards and optimize their performance by taking responsibility for their own learning.
Coordinates services to students as prescribed in Individual Educational Plans.
6.EFFECTIVE ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS
Maintain open and effective communication with students, parents, staff and administration using expected professional standards.
Participate actively in team/department/staff meetings.
7.CONTRIBUTIONS TO STUDENTS BEYOND THE CLASSROOM
Be available for student and/or parent conferences.
8.CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE SCHOOL AND/OR TEACHING PROFESSION
Work collaboratively to identify areas for school improvement, develop possible strategies, and assess results.
9.ENFORCEMENT AND COMPLIANCE WITH SCHOOL REGULATIONS
Observe and implement the rules and regulations established for the school system.
EVALUATION:Consistent with current Agreement Between the Longmeadow School Committee and the Longmeadow Education Association.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:Physical demands are a way of describing the physical activities that a job requires.
Strength: Light-lifting, 20 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 pounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Environmental conditions are a means of describing the physical surroundings of a worker in a specific job. This position is performed in a school setting where the environmental conditions should have no effect on how the job is performed.
Noise: Level 3 – Moderate level of intensity.
