Definition : Perform a variety of duties and responsibilities related to fire prevention and mitigation; complete and review development and construction plans and proposals; issue permits; conduct inspections of new construction and installations; monitor and test fire and safety systems; provide technical support and training; assist and follow-up on engine company referrals; records management.
Principal Duties :
- Conduct and complete plan reviews for compliance with the adopted Fire Code and related codes and ordinances.
- Issue permits for and inspect the installation of fire protection systems.
- Conduct, complete, and coordinate inspection activities in various types of building occupancies with fire operations and other City departments.
- Confer with architects, fire protection systems designers, builders, building owners, and the business community regarding fire / life safety codes and systems. Interpret codes and ordinances related to fire and safety systems; respond to questions or complaints from engineers, architects, contractors, and the general public.
- Prepare written reports, comments, notes, and documents for all activities.
- Review and comment on proposed code changes. Assist in writing local amendments to the Fire Code for adoption.
- Research, prepare, and present training on code requirements, principles of fire protection systems. Stay abreast of national trends, techniques, and code changes for fire and life safety.
- Reviews inspection, testing, maintenance reports from 3rd party inspection company.
- Provide consistently professional and responsive customer service.
- Performs essential duties and additional tasks in a manner which enhances City Attributes.
Working Environment :
Work is performed in a variety of environments to include, but not be limited to, office, construction sites, industrial facilities, classrooms, and other public places. The position requires the ability to read and understand the English language at a level adequate to perform the job including the interpretation of technical manuals and specifications. Work involves extended periods of sitting, standing, walking, and may include climbing ladders or scaffold. Work requires occasional moderate (15 to 50 lbs.) lifting. May occasionally be exposed to loud noises, dust, fumes, smoke or gases, and radiant energy. May occasionally be required to navigate slippery or uneven surfaces and work around moving objects or vehicles.
This job requires working closely with others continuously.
Must be able to collect, analyze, organize, and present information in written and oral formats.
