Job Summary
The Nuclear Medicine Technologist II is responsible for performing complex diagnostic and therapeutic procedures using radiopharmaceuticals and advanced imaging technologies. The Nuclear Medicine Technologist II ensures patient safety, prepares and administers radiopharmaceuticals, and collaborates with medical professionals to deliver high-quality patient care. This role also involves maintaining equipment, adhering to regulatory standards, and participating in continuous education to stay current with advancements in nuclear medicine.
Essential Functions
- Educates and provides direction to others as needed to ensure patient and staff safety. When unsafe conditions are identified, immediately reports to appropriate persons, and takes action to secure unsafe conditions.
- Obtains quality procedures utilizing all gamma cameras (planar and SPECT) according to department procedures, and performs QC procedures on gamma cameras, counting, and survey instruments. Can identify any equipment failure.
- Acquires and processes patient exams on PACS and RIS computer systems.
- Technologist is aware of biohazard and safety regulations, and takes necessary precautions.
- Maintains clean work area including counter, gamma cameras, imaging tables, and computer equipment.
- Assists Imaging Director develop and maintain Nuclear Medicine's budget.
- Verifies all data in PACS and RIS are completed at the end of shift.
- Demonstrates hand-off communication between shifts and with ER.
- Checks emergency equipment, stocks, cleans, and ensures work area is prepared.
- Technologist maintains and utilizes current knowledge of radiation protection practices.
- Performs all QC, keeps proper documentation for NRC/State regulatory agencies and inspections.
- Adheres to appropriate procedures on proper disposal of radioactive materials in accordance with regulatory compliance.
- Responds to isotope spills in an expedient manner, reports to the RSO or designee, follows spill protocol.
- Reports any misadminstrations to RSO, Imaging Director and follows any reporting protocols.
- Demonstrates awareness and adhere to radiation safety requirements and all regulatory requirements.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Complies with all policies and standards.
Qualifications
- Associate Degree graduate of an accredited program in Radiologic Technology required
- Bachelor's Degree graduate of an accredited program in Radiologic Technology and/or Nuclear Medicine Technology program with Nuclear Medicine registry preferred
- 1-3 years Experience as Registered Technologist required
- 3-5 years Experience as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist in an acute care setting preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of computer systems and software used in functional area
- Knowledge of medical equipment, instruments, and related functionalities
- Knowledge of Nuclear Medicine techniques, methods, and equipment
- Knowledge of principles and procedures involved in the operation of radiologic equipment
- Knowledge of radiation safety principles and procedures
- Knowledge of Nuclear Medicine & PET-CT quality control and quality assurance
- Knowledge of structural and organic anatomy including cross-sectional anatomy
- Knowledge of the principles of image processing and reconstruction
- Ability to perform standard diagnostic procedures using radioactive isotopes and to prepare reports
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
- Ability to apply judgment and make informed decisions

Licenses and Certifications
