Longwood Gardens is seeking an Associate Director to lead our Floriculture Production team and all aspects of the seasonal crop production process. This position requires commitment to excellence in crop quality balanced with financial prudence, environmental sustainability, and interdepartmental communication and collaboration. The ability to cultivate a strong floriculture production team, implement and successfully execute innovative horticulture practices, and deliver extraordinary seasonal crop displays for Longwood Gardens is required. Responsibilities Include:
- Leading the Floriculture Production team and all aspects of seasonal crop production aligned with Longwood’s strategic goals.
- Managing fiscal responsibility and environmental stewardship in crop production.
- Preparing and administering annual budgets, progress on strategic goals, and impact.
- Driving innovation through plant trials and new growing techniques.
- Compiling quarterly presentations on crop performance, updates and future outlooks.
- Coordinating professional development opportunities for the team.
- Recommending and implementing improved operating policies and procedures.
- Supporting operational goals and contributing to research and development projects.
- Assisting with special display installations, snow removal operations, and committee participation as needed.
The ideal candidate will possess:
- A Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture or a related field
- A minimum of 5 years experience overseeing floriculture production and planning
- A minimum of 5 years leading a floriculture production team
- Advanced knowledge in greenhouse management, production of a diverse array of crops, integrated pest management, and plant nutrition.
- Advanced computer literacy with crop scheduling programs, Microsoft Excel, Access, Word, and PowerPoint
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
- Advanced knowledge of working with controlled environmental systems like Argus.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Experience in project coordination and collaboration
- Experience managing grower contractors and suppliers to ensure purchased plant meet our design standards
- Ability to obtain DOT medical (for operating vehicles over 11,000 lbs.).
- A valid Driver's License
- Ability to lift 50 lbs. and work in a variety of weather condition for extended periods of time
