What are the responsibilities and job description for the HVAC Technician position at Longwood Gardens?

Longwood Gardens is seeking a full-time HVAC Technician to perform installation, repairs, and preventative maintenance of HVAC systems throughout the site, while adhering to established safety, EPA, and electrical regulations. Primary responsibilities include:
- Providing hands-on technical expertise for day-to-day operations and maintenance of HVAC equipment and controls, in a safe and cost-effective manner while ensuring good housekeeping and an excellent guest experience.
- Performing day-to-day HVAC maintenance, system checks to diagnose problems with the operation, and repairs of various systems including:
- Evaporative coolers.
- Walk-in refrigerated bulb coolers.
- Greenhouse heat and vent controls.
- Greenhouse blackout and shade cloth systems.
- Greenhouse and office space temperature and humidity controls.
- Root zone heating systems.
- Planning, organizing, ordering materials, and prioritizing individual work orders assigned.
- Performing administrative tasks related to the HVAC work orders.
- Responding to after-hour call-ins for emergency work as well as a planned rotation with significant off-shift coverage requirements.
- Providing support for operational and emergency needs including snow removal.
The ideal candidate will have a completed trade school program and 4 years of demonstrated relevant field experience. Additional requirements include:
- EPA Universal Certification required or ability to obtain one within 6 months of employment.
- Familiarity with email, and Microsoft Office products.
- Knowledge of NFPA 70E, and OSHA 1910S Safety Standards, as well as the ability to read P&ID, construction as-built drawings, and building prints is desired.
- Ability to operate the tools of the trade such as hand tools, drill press, pipe benders, and pipe threading.
- Ability to operate torches for cutting, burning, and soldering.
- Ability to operate all types of test equipment such as voltage testers, multimeters, and clamp-on ammeters.
- Ability to climb and work at heights on ladders, stairs, and scaffolding.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds; stand and sit for extended periods; enter confined spaces and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Strong decision-making, communication, analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills.
- A valid driver’s license.
