What are the responsibilities and job description for the SEASONAL GROWER ASSISTANT position at Longwood Gardens?

Longwood Gardens is seeking a seasonal Grower Assistant to support our Floriculture team from February through June/July. The individual in this position will perform a variety of tasks under the direction of our experienced Growers. Tasks for this position will be performed in small groups and independently. Responsibilities include:
- Staking, tying, pinching/pruning, potting, transplanting, watering, fertilizing, soil mixing, irrigation maintenance and assisting with the upkeep and cleanliness of work areas
- Grooming of plants as they are prepared for displays throughout the Gardens
- Assist with transporting potted plants to and from growing areas, which involves occasionally working around trucks, lift gates, forklifts, and utility vehicles
Requirements for this position include:
- Ability to work as part of a team and independently
- Ability to perform manual, repetitive tasks independently
- Ability to work outside in varying weather conditions
- Ability to lift at least 50 pounds
- Ability to sit, stand, and walk for long periods
- Ability to carry items as needed for tasks
- Prior horticultural experience and/or knowledge preferred but not required
- A valid driver’s license
The work schedule requires working 3-4 days per week, starting each day at 6:30AM.
