What are the responsibilities and job description for the Associate Director MES (Biotechnology) position at Lonza?

The Associate Director MES will be responsible for designing, development and rollout of MES standards, act as technical expert for our operations network on tool usage, liaison with vendor to drive improvements and direct support in execution and delivery of MES aspects of large Capital projects or separate initiatives globally for the areas where Lonza is using Syncade MES (actually Mammalian/Microbial, BioConjugates and Small Molecules Drug substance or similar fields). The successful candidate will lead initiatives utilizing their expertise, adhering to schedule and budgets, work on engineering design of MES and collaborating with cross functional teams including MSAT, Manufacturing and Quality Assurance to properly identify needs.
This role will be based out of one of the following Lonza locations: Portsmouth NH or Visp/Basel Switzerland with 20% travel expectation.

The ideal candidate will be an very experienced expert in Syncade that has worked on MES usage in biotech and/or small-molecules drug substance. We are looking for someone with sensitivity for commercial aspects, sound decision-making skills and the ability to liaise within matrix environment, build trust and positively influence outcomes in a fast-paced, regulated project environment. In addition the candidate should have experience with life cycle management of MES solutions.
Key responsibilities:
- Design, development and rollout of MES standards that maximize the value from the use of our MES solutions leveraging Emerson Syncade for Drug Substance
- Responsible for providing technical expertise towards internal project teams, MES SMEs and users; This is including validation, documentation and hand-over activities in accordance with Lonza procedures. For global elements also owning full life-cycle and validation of these elements
- Technical leadership and coordination of cross functional teams consisting of Internal Lonza customers such as Manufacturing, MSAT, and Quality Assurance to properly identify needs
- Keep abreast of technical developments that may have application in the Pharma / biotech industry and promote the use of those that provide strategic business benefits
- Develop and continuous improvement of technical global standard for electronic batch recording, lean principles and cGMP
- Contribute for the execution of the MES roadmap and global deployment of the Lonza Target Architecture standards across sites
Key requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree or higher degree, required- Engineering , Computer Science or similar program of study
- At least 8 years of experience with design and operation of MES within API/Biopharmaceutical facilities
- 6 years of experience in small scale project organization, management and coordination associated with the execution of capital projects in an industrial environment, including coordination of vendor / integrators management & leading contractors
- Experience with integrations of MES with automation systems, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems, Laboratory information management systems (LIMS) and IPC devices, preferably Delta-V and SAP
- Team player with exceptional customer service skills, integrity and ability to interact with all levels of organization;
- Able to quickly adjust to dynamic, fast-paced, matrix environment
- Willing/able to travel domestically up to 20%
