Lonza Pharma & Biotech has an open position for a Scientist/Engineer II to join the Biomanufacturing Solutions R&D team at our location in beautiful Bend, OR. This is an excellent opportunity to join a challenging, dynamic, and cross-disciplinary team of scientists and engineers who focus on improving the manufacturing of biologics medicines.
The Biomanufacturing Solutions R&D team maintains a laboratory scale fully digital bioreactor laboratory, analytical (bio)chemistry instruments, and a flexible pilot scale space for developing new processes for Lonza. As a Scientist II or Engineer II, you will be a member of a cross-disciplinary team of scientists and engineers who innovate and deliver solutions to biomanufacturing challenges at Lonza. Your versatility and aptitude to learn and contribute outside your core expertise will be key. You will be responsible for the successful execution of technical projects by routinely conducting experiments, analyzing and interpreting data, and presenting results to Lonza R&D teams. You will apply strong scientific or engineering fundamentals in a hypothesis-driven environment to guide the development and tech transfer of new technologies across the Lonza organization.
Position responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Operating laboratory scale bioreactors and distributed control systems. Designing, testing, and implementing innovative process workflows to meet dynamic R&D and business needs.
- Implementing new methodologies to characterize cell and cell culture material, applying high throughput methodology as appropriate.
- Consulting scientific literature to aid in experimental design and interpretation of results.
- Working closely with other R&D and operations functions at Lonza and mentoring junior colleagues.
- Delivering timely results in an agile project management framework.
- Travelling to conferences and other Lonza sites where needed (<5% time).
- Direct and frequent communication of scientific results to technical stakeholders.
Position requirements:
- B.S. in Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering or a related field of study.
- 3 years of industry laboratory experience or a combination of experience with an advanced degree.
- Direct experience with laboratory-scale bioreactor operations or high-throughput lab automation is preferred.
- Working knowledge of basic molecular biology techniques and/or mammalian cell culture experience is a plus.
- Strong fundamentals in mass and energy balances, heat and mass transfer, fluid mechanics, reaction kinetics, and biology.
- Strong quantitative skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
