Associate Director of Counseling
The Loomis Chaffee School seeks to hire either one full-time counselor or two part-time counselors. The ideal candidate(s) will have expertise in sports and performance psychology and demonstrated multicultural competence to support a diverse student body, including our BIPOC community. This role focuses on helping students enhance performance, manage stress, and navigate the pressures of competitive sports and other aspects of school life while supporting their mental and emotional well-being.
This position works closely with the school’s Student Life team, including Deans of Students, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, Residential Life, Athletics, and Health Center staff, to foster a supportive, affirming, and inclusive environment for students.
About the Counseling Department
The Counseling Department at The Loomis Chaffee School provides psychological services to boarding and day students and is well-integrated into campus life. The team is multidisciplinary, collaborative, and committed to providing holistic support to a diverse student population. Counselors work in close partnership with faculty, administrators, and external mental health professionals to ensure comprehensive care.
Key Responsibilities
Student Counseling and Support
- Provide individual and group counseling to students, addressing concerns such as performance anxiety, stress management, and emotional resilience.
- Offer crisis intervention and participate in the on-call rotation for after-hours support.
- Maintain accurate, confidential records in compliance with ethical and legal guidelines.
- Stay informed on best practices in sports/performance psychology and adolescent mental health to enhance student well-being.
- Support students in developing coping strategies, problem-solving skills, and overall emotional health.
Collaboration and Consultation
- Serve as a liaison between students, faculty, dorm staff, and families to ensure coordinated support.
- Consult with teachers, advisors, and administrators to identify and assist students in need.
- Provide referrals and collaborate with external mental health professionals as necessary.
- Partner with parents and guardians to address student concerns and coordinate care strategies.
- Attend multidisciplinary team meetings to contribute to student well-being plans.
Community Engagement & Leadership
- Deliver proactive workshops on topics such as stress management, mindfulness, resilience, and healthy relationships.
- Work with the Director of Counseling to provide faculty and staff consultation, training, and mental health resources for the school community.
- Assist in training student leaders in their various roles.
- Serve as an advisor to a small cohort of students.
- Be an active presence in the boarding school community by attending events, meals, and activities.
- Assist in shaping counseling initiatives and policies to align with student needs.
Qualifications
Required:
- Master's or Doctoral degree in Sports Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Counseling, Social Work, or a related field.
- Licensed or eligible for licensure in the State of Connecticut.
- Experience working with adolescents and/or student-athletes in a counseling or therapeutic setting.
- Strong understanding of the psychological demands of competitive sports and student-athlete well-being.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and administrators in a school setting.
- Commitment to confidentiality and ethical standards in student care.
Preferred:
- Experience working with a diverse student population in a residential school setting.
- Knowledge of evidence-based interventions and techniques in sports/ performance psychology and other therapeutic modalities.
- Strong commitment to enact principles of social justice and navigating layers of identity experienced by students, including race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, ability, religion, class, and nationality.
- A high level of integrity, creativity and motivation.
Position Details
- This is a 10-month administrative position.
- For full-time positions, salary is competitive and includes an excellent benefits package (health care, retirement plan, etc.).
- Part-time candidates may have flexible scheduling options.
- The role includes participation in an on-call rotation for after-hours student support.
