The Loomis Chaffee School seeks a director for the Kravis Center for Excellence in Teaching. Launched in 2010, the Kravis Center was the first of the Loomis Chaffee Centers and has been a model for many independent schools that likewise have sought to provide first-rate professional development “in house” and focused exclusively on the craft of teaching.
The Director of the Henry R. Kravis ’63 Center for Excellence in Teaching will be responsible for guiding and nurturing faculty in their ongoing pursuit of excellence, sustaining in our faculty the same passion for lifelong learning that we seek to instill in our students. The center provides the space and the time for teachers to support each other and learn from each other, all in the service of student learning. The culture around teaching at the school is one in which teachers challenge each other to be their best and to pursue excellence.
The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in helping colleagues at different career stages toward betterment and improvement. Departmental leadership, instructional coaching, mentoring, and onboarding early-career teachers are all relevant experiences, as is a proven track record of staying abreast of pedagogical best practices, the cognitive science of learning, and the incorporation of research-based practices to improve student learning outcomes. The ideal candidate will also have significant academic leadership experience, preferably at an academic residential community or at an independent school, and a master’s degree in a related field. A doctorate is desirable but not essential. This is an exceptional opportunity to be an academic leader at one of the nation’s premier boarding schools.
Specific Responsibilities:
- Serve as a thought leader on campus and an inspirational resource for ongoing faculty development and growth; promote a culture of continuous improvement.
- Stay connected to the latest developments in educational research and best practices in both secondary schools and in colleges and universities; represent the school to relevant external audiences.
- Organize and manage support for new faculty, mentorship, instructional coaching, and professional learning communities.
- Curate resources and oversee the dissemination of relevant educational resources, such as “Monday Musings,” to keep faculty and administration informed on current educational research and best practices.
- Model a deep understanding of teenagers, adolescent development and learning, and an appreciation of this age group and the joys and challenges of teaching them.
- Organize professional development events, workshops, speakers, and symposia to address emerging and relevant topics in education.
- Oversee the physical space in the Kravis Center; manage and nurture a staff of several associate directors of the Kravis Center.
- Work closely and collaborate with administration, academic departments, and other centers to integrate innovative teaching strategies and support institutional goals.
- Other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred; doctorate a plus.
- Seven to ten years of progressively responsible academic leadership experience in a secondary school, preferably at a boarding school or other independent school.
- Current and extensive knowledge of research-informed practices for teaching adolescents in a rigorous academic setting.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; outstanding interpersonal skills.
- Ability to multitask and meet deadlines; ability to work independently and as part of a team; ability to collaborate across constituencies.
- An affinity for a boarding school community and an obvious joy in working with teenagers.
- Integrity, confidentiality, and a strong work ethic.
