Job Overview
To perform responsible cleaning and custodial functions at assigned school site(s), the District Office of other District facilities, and to perform routine gardening and maintenance duties in the upkeep of District buildings and facilities as assigned. Employees in this classification receive general supervision within a framework of standard policies and procedures. Employees in this job class exercise responsibility for the general cleanliness and routine maintenance of assigned buildings, facilities, and grounds. Employees in this classification perform responsible custodial and gardening duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Performs responsible janitorial and custodial functions at assigned site(s), District Office or other District facilities.
- Cleans classrooms, restrooms, cafeteria, multi-purpose rooms, libraries, offices, and related facilities on a daily basis.
- Sweeps, mops, scrubs, waxes, vacuums, and shampoos carpets and floors as required.
- Cleans walls, furniture, windows, woodwork, chalkboards, chalk trays, whiteboards, light covers, etc. as required.
- Empties, cleans, and lines trash receptacles daily.
- Dusts furniture, window sills, and shelves as required.
- Sets and checks furnaces, heaters, and air conditioning systems as required; changes filters, cleans and oils heaters.
- Inspects assigned school/district areas and grounds for vandalism, damage, and sanitary and safety hazards; reports hazards to appropriate authority and prepares work orders for repairs needed.
- Performs routine grounds keeping duties as assigned; waters, trims, sprays, and fertilizes plants, trees, and lawns; pulls weeds; and mows lawns.
- Performs minor maintenance repair, and adjustments to buildings, fixtures, and equipment; plug outlets, and switches; adjusts shades/blinds; assembles furniture; adjusts desks as needed.
- Checks and refills towel, toilet paper, and soap dispensers daily.
- Raises/lowers flags; sets up/takes down playground equipment daily.
- Sets, monitors and maintains electronic timing devices, such as irrigation timers, other timing devices, digital clocks, televisions, VCR’s, computers, thermostats, etc.
- Files work orders, equipment repair reports, etc. with the appropriate party.
- Replaces lights and light fixtures, may include ballasts.
- Picks up papers and debris; cleans walkways and entrances.
- Orders and stocks school and custodial supplies as assigned.
- Operates cleaning and gardening equipment such as vacuums, floor cleaning and polishing machines, scrubbers, steam cleaners, mowers, and trimmers.
- Locks and unlocks doors, windows, and gates to ensure security of buildings and related areas; turns alarms on/off.
- Sets up and arranges furniture and facilities for assemblies, lunch, meetings, and special events upon request to include arranging chairs, desks, equipment etc.
- Responds to emergency cleanups such as spills and clogged drains.
- Assists in performing a variety of general maintenance tasks during summer months under the direction of Maintenance/Operations Supervisor, including painting, light electrical work, carpentry, and plumbing as assigned.
- Performs other duties similar to the above in scope and function as required.
- Inspects playground equipment for wear and tear and safety hazards as assigned.
Knowledge and Skills
Knowledge of:
- Modern cleaning methods, materials, tools, and equipment associated with custodial/janitorial work.
- Routine grounds keeping and gardening methods and practices.
- Care and maintenance of custodial and gardening equipment and tools.
Ability to:
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions in an independent manner.
- Communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
- Safely use and apply cleaning agents, equipment, and materials.
- Effectively perform general gardening and custodial work.
- Meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform required duties.
- Adjust schedule and performance to comply with District cleaning standards and schedules.
- Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.
Physical Demands: Medical Category III – Heavy Physical Effort
- Positions in this category require physical ability associated with prolonged periods of physical exertion.
- Position regularly performs heavy physical labor requiring ability to lift, carry, push, pull, and move heavy objects or materials.
- Great physical demand for strength and endurance.
- Requires heavy physical effort such as lifting over 50 pounds on a continuous basis.
- Physical functions involve heavy physical exertion.
- Lifting over 50 pounds or carrying any object up to 25 pounds
