What are the responsibilities and job description for the Engineer position at Loretto Hospital?
Under supervision of the Chief Engineer, operates and tends to the hospital’s boiler, boiler auxiliary and other plant accessory equipment, control pumps and other auxiliary for proper functioning of facilities. Operates air conditioning equipment and air handling units. Operate the emergency generator when needed and manages the operation of the physical plant during his/her shift and maintain required logs and reports. This candidate is required to respond to the department phones and to Support Services Administration.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned
- Under general supervision, performs normal repair work on buildings, furniture, and equipment in an effective manner.
- Assists with equipment and furniture moving as needed.
- Effectively operates and maintains boilers, fire pumps, fire alarm system, various HVAC equipment, air handling units, air compressors, domestic and hot water system, cooling towers, vacuum pumps, emergency generators, elevators, refrigerator equipment, etc. to obtain a safe and operable environment.
- Basic troubleshooting skills of various hospital equipment.
- Basic pipe insulation skills.
- Must have pipe brazing skills.
- Must have basic wiring skills (phase motors, pumps, control wiring)
- Assist with sustaining inventory of parts and supplies, as needed.
- Responds to all fire alarms and disaster codes; effectively operates emergency equipment as needed.
- Demonstrates proficiency with power tools and equipment.
- Provides a safe environment for occupants of buildings and grounds.
- Maintains equipment for operable condition and accurately maintain daily logs on all equipment.
- Participates with conducting daily inspections of hospital areas; to ensure continuity of services.
- Supports the entire Plant Operations department to meet the goals and objectives of Support Services.
- Manages time in a productive and reliable manner, completing work assignments.
- The ability to accept or respond to change in a manner that promotes and supports departmental/hospital goals and objectives is essential.
- Is knowledgeable of and follows safety/infection control policies and other procedures to ensure a safe environment for self and others. Addresses potential safety concerns related to equipment and the working environment.
- Provides and give cooperative and courteous service to patients, visitors, staff, physicians, volunteers, and other internal/external customers. Ensuring that communication and job activity result in a positive customer experience.
- Operates power tools and equipment (electric drills, sander, scroll saw, table saw, radial arm saw, drill press, etc).
- Adjusts work schedule to accommodate changing priorities of the hospital.
- Follows established emergency, infection control and/or universal precautions and procedures as required.
- Attends mandatory in-service(s) related to safety and/or infection control.
- Keeps abreast of all pertinent federal, state and hospital regulations, laws, and policies as they presently exist and as they are modified.
- Performs other related duties as assigned, relevant to the job.
- Assists with snow and ice removal during the winter seasons.
COMPLIANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Understands and adheres to Loretto Hospital’s compliance standards as they appear in the Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policy.
- Keeps abreast of all pertinent federal, state and Hospital regulations, laws, and policies as they presently exist and as they change or are modified.
- Ensures that the staff are trained and evaluated on their knowledge of and adherence to compliance policies and procedures specific to their jobs.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required;
- Current City of Chicago Operating Engineers license.
- Valid Illinois Drivers License.
- A valid EPA approved license/certification is required
- Previous courses in Electricity for Engineers I and II (or equivalent) is required.
- Must have three years’ experience in general maintenance and repair work.
