What are the responsibilities and job description for the Ward Clerk- Full time Days position at Loretto Hospital?
Under the supervision of the Nurse Manager, the Ward Clerk assists in coordinating the flow of patient care maintaining patient records, directing the flow of written and telephone communication, assisting visitors and families, ordering supplies and equipment, coordinating scheduling for test, procedures, transports and transfers and assures for a safe, clean orderly environment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned
- Answers phone calls courteously and efficiently, directing or relaying phone messages to the appropriate staff.
- Transcribes designated non-medication physician orders accurately.
- Maintains all medical records with adequate forms, posts lab and X-ray reports, organizes documents in chart correctly.
- Understands and utilizes all functions of the computer system available in the units: admissions transfers.
- Discharges, requisitions, charges, order entry etc.
- Maintains adequate supplies of forms in the unit (flow sheets, consents, restraints forms. standing orders, protocols, progress notes etc.)
- Posts reminders, maintains communication book, logs, and bulletin boards.
- Maintains adequate levels of stock supplies and equipment, anticipating changing demand or altered supply states.
- Assist in cleaning, straightening or organizing of any of the staff space on the unit.
- Instructs visitors and other guest of the unit policies such as visiting hours, access to physician's hours, patient confidentiality, smoking restriction, phone calls, food restriction, etc.
- Completes work orders and follows up with charge nurse and Clinical Director for any malfunctioning equipment, damage or injury to the physical plant, or safety concerns.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- Graduate from accredited High School or GED.
- A full working knowledge of clerical skills (filling, phone, copying) and clear, concise communication skills. Demonstrates core competency required for job performance. Language and communication skills of seeing, listening, reading, writing, and speaking are necessary to effectively process and present information in English. Accurate mathematical calculations are required.
- Basic Life Support for healthcare providers and Crisis Prevention Intervention certification required.
- Skills Required: Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, familiarity with medical terminology, computer proficiency (for data entry and using hospital management systems), excellent communication skills, and the ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand or walk as well as occasionally stoop, crouch or crawl. Using proper body mechanics, the employee may be expected to lift, pull, push or move patients and/or equipment. Fine motor skills are required when using hands and fingers to handle, feel or reach. Normal or corrected vision, hearing and ability to speak are necessary. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, sharp eye focus and ability to distinguish colors. There will be period of stressful intense concentration with more than average pressure used in a variety of problem solving situations.
