Position Summary:
Under direct supervision of the Gas Water Sewer (GWS) Supervisor and under close supervision of a GWS Senior Pipefitter or GWS Pipefitter, assists in the installation, repairing, constructing, and maintaining the county's gas, water, and sanitary sewer systems. Maintains confidentiality of all privileged information.

- High School Diploma or GED.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must possess or have ability to obtain within sixty days of employment and must maintain a valid New Mexico Class D driver’s license.
- Must possess, or ability to obtain within six months of employment, First Aid and Defensive Driving Certifications.
- If working in Water Production or Gas, Water and Sewer, must be a US citizen and must be able to obtain a non-cleared Department of Energy (DOE) badge for access to Los Alamos National Laboratory.
- Successful completion of the pre-employment physical exam prior to commencing work.
- If working in Gas, Water and Sewer, successful completion of mandatory drug screening and subsequent random drug and alcohol screenings.
Additional Minimum Qualifications for Apprentice 1:
- One year of experience in gas, water, or sewer utilities systems.
- Must possess and maintain a CDL-A driver’s license with air brakes and tanker endorsements. If licensed in another state, must transfer licensure to New Mexico within 60 days of employment.
- Must possess and maintain New Mexico Journeyman Gasfitters License, or equivalent licensure from another jurisdiction, or must possess and maintain one of the following certifications from the New Mexico Water Quality Control Commission or
one of the listed certifications within six months of employment.
- Must possess and maintain gas system Operator Qualifications (OQ’s) as required by the federal Department of Transportation Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration rules and regulations for the duties of the position.
- Successful completion of annual fit testing for use of a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus.
- Successful completion of the pre-employment physical exam prior to commencing work.
- Successful completion of mandatory drug screening and subsequent random drug and alcohol screenings.
- Must be a US citizen and must be able to obtain a non-cleared Department of Energy (DOE) badge for access to Los Alamos National Laboratory.
Additional Minimum Qualifications for GWS Apprentice 2:
- Additional one year of experience in gas, water, sewer, or utilities field.
- Must possess and maintain New Mexico Water Quality Control Commission Water Distribution System I or Water System I Certificate, or equivalent from another jurisdiction. If certified in another jurisdiction, must receive New Mexico Water Quality
- Must possess and maintain New Mexico Water Quality Control Commission Wastewater Collection System I or Wastewater System I Certification, or equivalent from another jurisdiction. If certified in another jurisdiction, must receive New Mexico
- Must possess and maintain current certificate in plastic welding as required by the Department of Transportation (DOT) 49CFR192.
