SUMMARY:
The Technical Director (TD) has the daily responsibility for the technical operations of the theatre including lighting, sound, set design and construction, and coordinating necessary maintenance. The TD works with a great deal of independence and exercises independent judgment in performing a wide variety of duties.
TD Oversees the general management of the Duane Smith Auditorium (DSA)
- Manage all scheduling of DSA, including school events which have priority, contracts for Duane Smith Auditorium rentals as well as all associated paperwork (insurance, liability waivers, receipting of monies, etc…)
- Operates, maintains and safeguards the technical assets of the theatre, including supervising the use of lighting, sound, communications equipment, and the use and maintenance of stage facilities.
- Determines the necessary technical supports, such as lighting, sound, staging, and special needs, necessary for events and performances presented at the facility in advance of production dates.
- Designs, sets up, maintains, and operates lighting and sound systems for theatre, dance, music, and other productions and projects; assists guest designers and arts with technical matters.
- Advises production managers, lighting and sound designers on the technical specifications, costs and usage of technical equipment required for the individual show, and supervises the implementations of approved technical designs.
- Supervises and assists with set and stage construction and management.
- Assists in recruiting, training and assignment of volunteer or paid technical staff for shows.
- Orients facility renters and visiting productions to safety, technical characteristics and other areas of facility operations; facilitates the use of the technical facilities by the resident company and others engaged by or renting the facility.
- Monitors the condition of equipment including lighting, sound, and rigging equipment; arranges for the repair and replacement within budgetary constraints; performs preventive maintenance on equipment.
- Assists with the preparation and control of production budgets; maintains inventory and orders specialized supplies.
- Attends technical rehearsals, in order to supervise and assist in the technical aspects of the mounting the show.
- Make recommendations regarding capital purchases of technical equipment and theater upgrades.

LAPS Elementary School stage management
Maintain stage lighting
Maintain stage sound system
Provide guidance and assistance to elementary staff for production and stagecraft.
Because a TD may be called upon to deal with a wide range of technical issues, he or she benefits from a working knowledge of techniques, methods and procedures of theatre, dance, and music productions and presentations including stage, set, sound and lighting design and implementation; stage management; computerized lighting systems; stage carpentry; appropriate safety precautions and procedures.
Minimum Qualifications
- Five years of experience in Theatre management and maintenance.
- Three years supervisory experience across all years of job related experience.
- Must possess or have ability to obtain within first sixty days of employment and must maintain a valid New Mexico driver’s license.
- Knowledge and understanding of the design and installation of theatre equipment, preventive maintenance programs for said equipment, inventory management.
- Skill in operating various word-processing, spreadsheets, and database software programs in a Windows environment.
- Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.
- Skill in records organization and maintenance.
- Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
- Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
- Ability to resolve customer complaints and concerns.
- Ability to effectively and efficiently handle multiple, simultaneous, and complex tasks and projects.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to sit, walk and stand; have manual and finger dexterity; stoop, talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to climb stairs, heights and ladders. The employee is occasionally required to crawl, reach above shoulder level, crouch, kneel, balance, push/pull, and carry. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds with the assistance of another person or appropriate equipment.
Work Environment
Work is generally performed in an office and an outdoors setting with a high noise level. Exposure to natural weather conditions with high exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises. Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, and requires following basic safety precautions. Travel, attendance at various meetings, on-site response to emergency situations and work outside of the normal business hours may be required.
