Trusted by our nation, emulated by our peers, and respected by the world, Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking a passionate and driven Research and Development Engineer (R&D 4) to join our Applied System Analytics team. The position resides within the Advanced Systems Development Group (Q-18) that champions and makes direct contributions to the safety, security, and effectiveness of our Nation's nuclear stockpile to reduce emerging national security and global threats.
In this role, you will be at the forefront of design and development of future weapon systems in support of our nation's foremost defense missions. You will work with an elite team of engineers, scientists, national defense partners, and other subject matter expert's resident at LANL and from across the nuclear weapons enterprise to develop and engineer weapon concepts. These projects range in scope and fidelity from concept trade studies to advanced, multi-partner ground and flight test demonstrator efforts.
Q-18's Applied System Analytics Team provides engineering analysis support to rapidly evaluate design changes or emergent issues for subsystems, full systems, and related tests. We use all tools and methods at our disposal to formulate the appropriate solution strategy for the problem at hand - maximizing the value-added to a program by balancing assumptions, scope, and lead time.
This position is critical to the national security of the United States and its allies and requires broad expertise across a number of sometimes disparate fields that are applicable to current and future weapon systems. The Applied System Analytics Team is just one of the many teams in Q-18 applying a broad range of technical skills in response to emerging threats. In Q-18, we

Coordinates, monitors, and contributes to the work of technical staff to achieve tactical and strategic goals. Provides technical direction to diverse teams for Laboratory-wide initiatives. Proven ability to achieve milestones and deliverables in a dynamic environment while remaining within budget and schedule constraints.
Communication: Ability to lead effective, intellectually diverse teams and to interact with Laboratory- and complex-wide networks. Represents the Laboratory to external agencies. Interacts routinely with Laboratory middle- and senior-level management. Demonstrated ability to clearly communicate technical material verbally and in writing.
Job Knowledge and Experience: Advanced knowledge of and experience in engineering disciplines, designing, planning, and executing research and development projects. Demonstrated experience applying engineering fundamentals in the design phases of project development
Education and Experience Required: This position requires a master's degree in engineering from an accredited institution and 12 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.

Desired Qualifications:
- Active Q Clearance or equivalent DoD clearance.
- Experience within the DoD or Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) weapons production or design programs.
- Demonstrated ability contributing to several efforts simultaneously, with some being entirely independent and others requiring frequent technical collaboration and leadership.
- Enthusiasm and demonstrated ability to mentor early career staff and empower them to solve problems with varying fidelity of analysis techniques (from hand calculations to simple code to detailed finite element modeling)
- Excellent verbal and written communication and teamwork skills; excellent technical presentation and writing skills
- Knowledge of CAD, GD&T, design for manufacturing, and application of Factors of Safety to engineering design - all specifically in relation to the nuclear weapons engineering applications
- Significant experience with commercial finite element analysis (FEA) software packages, such as Abaqus, and demonstrated ability to utilize advanced features of the code - complex material models, large networks of contact interactions, leveraging implicit and explicit solvers, etc.
- Significant experience using a common coding language such as Python, Matlab, R, or C , specifically in the application of engineering calculations using commercial FEA packages
