High Power Radio Frequency Engineered Systems Tec 2/3

Los Alamos National Laboratory
Los Alamos, NM Full Time
POSTED ON 1/12/2025
AVAILABLE BEFORE 2/18/2025
What You Will Do

The Accelerator Operations and Technology Division (AOT), Radio Frequency Engineering (RFE) group is seeking an Engineered Systems Technician 2 or 3 for the 805 MHz Team

The AOT division maintains, operates, and upgrades all accelerator systems used at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) complex. These systems consist of two 750-keV Cockcroft-Walton-based injector systems (H and H- systems), a 201.25-MHz drift-tube linear accelerator (LINAC) utilizing high-power diacrode tubes, an 805-MHz coupled cavity LINAC utilizing high-power klystrons as the primary power source, a proton storage ring, and roughly a kilometer of beam transport lines that deliver beam to the five independent research programs.

The RFE group is principally responsible for all radio frequency (RF) systems, and for the development of solid-state amplifier technology as an optional technology for replacing klystron modulators. RFE is also responsible for all pulsed-power systems and all high-power DC power supplies used to operate magnets on the beam transport lines. The group consists of five teams: one team is focused on Low-Level RF (LLRF) real-time phase and amplitude controls; a second team is focused on DC magnet power supplies, a third team on pulsed-power systems; and the fourth and fifth teams are focused on high-power RF (HPRF) systems. The HPRF team is responsible for the multi-megawatt RF systems that drive the 201.25 MHz linac and the 805 MHz linac. These include the RF generating systems (klystrons and diacrodes) and the high-power high-voltage systems that support them.

Engineered Systems Tec 2 ($52,400 - $80,600) The EST 2 position requires using basic bench top electronic test equipment, hand tools, and measuring devices to conduct testing in a development mode and determines methods or actions to correct malfunctions or design problems. The successful candidate must also be able to provide after-hours primary "on-call" support approximately one week out of four weeks.

Engineered Systems Tec 3 ($63,200 - $99,000) In addition to what was outlined at the lower level (EST 2), at this level (EST 3): The EST 3 position requires experience using basic electronic test equipment such as oscilloscopes and voltmeters. The position also requires experience and ability to read and understand basic electrical wiring diagrams or schematics, work from documentation, diagrams, rough sketches, layouts, and verbal instructions. Some experience performing installation, maintenance, commissioning, and repairs on electrical/electronic equipment and/or systems is expected. Some level of experience troubleshooting circuits containing multiple integrated or discrete components is needed. The position requires the ability to complete Forklift and incidental crane training / certification. The successful candidate must also be able to provide after-hours primary "on-call" support approximately one week out of four weeks.

The successful candidate will be offered a position on the AOT-RFE 805 MHz HPRF team and will perform technical installation and/or maintenance functions supporting engineering activities relating to RF controls. The successful applicant will be expected to work closely with engineers and other technicians both within and outside the group to meet both HPRF and group technical goals and deliverables. Additional specific duties include helping to define technical requirements, working on multiple tasks and projects, building new electronic and RF hardware, repairing, and maintaining existing legacy systems, managing the technical interfaces with other LANSCE teams, preparing conduct of engineering documentation, using the accelerator operations maintenance database to track existing system performance, and demonstrating technical excellence and performance to meet system requirements.

This position will be filled at either the EST 2 or EST 3 level, which is working with senior technicians, technologists, and engineers on electronic equipment, depending on the skills and experience of the selected candidate.
