What You Will Do

Are you ready to start your Designer/Drafter career with a mission that matters? The Integrated Weapons Experiments (J) Division in the Weapons Engineering Directorate at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking passionate Designer/Drafters to join our team and help support the future of our nation's security.

This position will be filled at either the Designer/Drafter 2 or Designer/Drafter 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Designer/Drafter 2 ($53,700 - $82,500)

The successful candidate will:

  • Adhere to engineering polices, programs, procedures and practices related to design and drafting.
  • Use high-level, three-dimensional parametric CAD systems to develop multi-discipline design documents. Demonstrate working knowledge of second CAD system. Develops specifications.
  • Create complete drawing packages that require minimal checking
  • Create complex, large assemblies using parametric models and proper mating conditions
  • Apply sound knowledge of engineering materials and their suitability for component fabrication. Makes materials decisions of design packages.
  • Apply proficient knowledge of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Y14.5 or Laboratory drafting manual, as appropriate to job duties.
  • Participate in design reviews and resolves design conflicts.
  • Provide interface for complex design issues.

Designer/Drafter 3 ($64,700 - $101,400)

In addition to the duties outlined at the lower level, the successful candidate will:

  • Apply working knowledge of technical standards, principles, theories, concepts and techniques in the completion of complex work assignments.
  • Apply cross-functional knowledge to resolve design issues.
  • Adhere to modeling standards optimizing CAD best practices for efficiency and achievability.
  • Utilize working knowledge of three-dimensional (3D) model report generation
  • May perform drawing checks
  • Collaborate with engineers to create dimensioning strategies.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Minimum 3 years of experience with computer-aided drafting (CAD) modeling and engineering drawing preparation with software such as Creo and Solidworks;
  • Demonstrated experience in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerance (GD&T) per ASME Y14.5 engineering drawing standard, application of symbols and notes to ensure models capture design intent
  • Demonstrated experience in precision mechanical design of structures, systems, and components, with consideration to design for manufacturability.
  • Demonstrated ability to layout systems in schematic and plan view
  • Ability to obtain DOE Q Clearance

Additional Job Requirements for Designer/Drafter 3:

At this level, in addition to what was outlined at the lower level, may be project lead on process or product design. May assign tasks to and monitor work of project progress in the group when assigned lead responsibility to support engineers in dimensioning strategies. May supervise aspects of work of others and performs own work with minimal direction. Completed work is reviewed from the expectation of advanced professional results without appreciable direction. Involved with technical solutions to complex and/or unique problems, which require the regular use of ingenuity, creativity and independence. Solutions may be original and impact the outcome of the entire project.

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a High School diploma or equivalent and 3 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires an Associate's Degree in an Engineering or Technical field and 3 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with Windchill type software and PDM link
  • Advanced knowledge of pressure vessel designs
  • Experience performing drawing checks
  • Active DOE Q Clearance

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
