Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking a skilled professional to join our Engineering Services (ES) Division as a Fire Protection Nuclear Facilities Engineer. The Engineering Services - Fire Protection Engineering (ES-FPE) Group is the Laboratory's central fire protection engineering and program support entity, responsible for providing institutional technical direction and support for the Lab's nuclear and nonnuclear facilities and programs. This position will be filled at the Nuclear Facilities Engineer 4 level.

Fire Protection Nuclear Facilities Engineer 4 ($146,800 - $254,700)

In this role, you will be expected to perform one or more of the following duties :

  • Provide fire protection and life safety subject matter expert (SME) technical support to the laboratory facility management and programmatic organizations
  • Prepare and maintain fire hazard analyses and related documentation for complex laboratory, radiological, and nuclear facilities
  • Construct project support, design plan review, submittals and test plan review and approval
  • Act as lab-wide fire safety and fire protection operations SME support
  • Support wildland fire risk reduction initiative
  • Perform facility fire protection and life safety system assessments
  • Perform fire protection and life safety system commissioning, periodic testing, and maintenance oversight
  • Prepare equivalencies and exemptions, development of equivalencies and exemptions to DOE Directives, building and NFPA codes
  • Prepare technical reviews of proposed new activities for LANL fire protection program adherence

At this level, expectations also include :

  • Sustaining and leading initiatives the fire protection engineering and loss prevention programs
  • Mentoring and technical leadership of staff
  • Interfacing with nuclear facility safety basis and facility engineering professionals
  • Working with all levels of Laboratory management and representing the Division and Laboratory to internal customers, external agencies, and community organizations
  • What You Need

    Minimum Job Requirements :

  • Demonstrated ability to perform detailed technical reviews of fire protection criteria and requirements in design and construction documents and provide effective comments and feedback back to the design team
  • Extensive experience in inspection, testing, and / or commissioning of fire protection and life safety systems and features
  • Experience in documented assessment, analysis, or evaluation of fire hazards and risks of facilities or processes
  • Experience in evaluating fire protection needs, concerns, and requirements to solve complex problems through creative solutions and appropriate compromise
  • Advanced abilities in effectively communicating compliance concerns both verbally and in writing for management, customers, peers, craft personnel, and / or other stakeholders
  • Demonstrated leadership aptitude including clear focus on providing professional customer service
  • Education / Experience : Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 12 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. A degree in Fire Protection Engineering or an advanced engineering / technical degree is highly desirable.

    Desired Qualifications :

  • Active Q Clearance
  • Certification as Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS), Certified Plans Examiner (CPS), and / or Certified Fire Inspector (CFI) - NFPA or ICC-based
  • Professional Engineer (PE) registration
  • Experience with protection of property, assets, and operations as highly protected risks (HPR), such as FM Global datasheets or AXA XL property risk guidelines
  • Experience with industrial fire protection and life safety, e.g., chemical processes, wet chemistry and laser laboratories, radiological laboratories, high-hazard, and radiological facilities
  • Reactor or nonreactor nuclear facility experience
  • Knowledge of DOE-O-420.1C, DOE-STD-1066, LANL Engineering Standards Manual, and Conduct of Engineering (CoE) work principles
  • Proven leadership in mentorship of junior-level fire protection engineers, technicians, and other employees

    Work Location : The work location for this position is hybrid and is located in Los Alamos, NM. Hybrid is defined as working partially onsite / partially offsite but within 2 hours ground commute of this location. All work locations are at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.

    Position Commitment : Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

    Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2.     Clearance : Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements

  • for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
  • Eligibility requirements : To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
  • New-Employment Drug Test : The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

    Regular Position : Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

    Internal Applicants : Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the required period of continuous service, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader.     Incentive Compensation Program : Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
