This position will be filled at either the Engineering Technologist 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Weapon Systems Engineering (W) Division provides systems engineering and program management to ensure the safety, reliability, and security of our nation's nuclear stockpile for the entire life cycle. W Division is responsible for leadership of activities in stockpile assessment, certification, and life extension projects.

The Military & Stockpile Operations Office (W-MSO) is looking for a Military Interface Technologist (Engineering Technologist) to join our team! As an Engineering Technologist in W-MSO, you will work jointly with the Sandia National Laboratories Military Liaison (SNL-ML) Organization to interface with the Department of Defense (DOD) in support of weapons maintenance activities. You will also could support W-MSO's mission at the Weapons Engineering Science and Technology Education Center (WESTEC) and will have the opportunity to learn about all of the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) weapons in the US stockpile.

Engineering Technologist 2 $92,300 - $151,000

Responsibilities will include:

  • Serving as the interface for certain military activities to the LANL weapon system and component groups.
  • Working with members of W-MSO, internal stakeholders, and subject matter experts to coordinate the LANL position on resolution of unsatisfactory reports (URs) and updates to, or generation of DOD related technical publications (TPs).
  • Representing LANL to external organizations at various military and stockpile related activities.
  • Performing technical research and gather data needed by engineers to solve technical problems and to recommend actions.
  • Contribute to the development of the organization's goals and objectives.
  • Determine an approach to solutions, plans, and schedules, and arrange your own activities in accomplishing these objectives.
  • Support operations at WESTEC, including helping to develop a training program, training civilian and DOD personnel on relevant weapon operations, and support for various research and development activities.

Engineering Technologist 3 $101,700 - $168,200

In addition to what was described at the Engineering Technologist 2 level, at the Engineering Technologist 3 level you will be expected to

  • Uses professional concepts and Laboratory objectives to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways.
  • Frequently contributes to the development of new methods and approaches.
  • Applies expert knowledge of the principles and theories of engineering, mathematics and science to solve routine technical problems in area of discipline.
  • Work with engineering staff to prepare and/or carry out changes in products in area of discipline; coordinate corrective actions.
  • Assists in on-the-job training of personnel
  • Completed work is reviewed from the expectation of expert results without appreciable direction.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Weapons Experience

Knowledge of the US Nuclear Weapons Enterprise and of LANL weapon systems, subsystems, and components. Comprehensive working knowledge of one or more of the following: nuclear weapon design, development, qualification, certification, assembly/production, surveillance, or limited life component exchange operations as performed by the US Air Force and/or the US Navy.

Organization and Resolution of Technical Issues

Demonstrated ability to effectively plan and organize assignments, meet schedules and deliverables for multiple concurrent projects with a range of priorities. Demonstrated ability to identify, address, and resolve technical problems. This position will receive technical and operational direction from designated supervisor or manager and must have the ability to work independently or as part of a team.

Communication and Formality

Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with all levels of management and personnel, including internal and external customers and stakeholders. Display technical writing skills and overall strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to work with a high level of formality.

Additional Job Requirements for Engineering Technologist 3

  • Expert knowledge of engineering principles and basic technical responsibilities within your designated discipline
  • Expert ability to seek the input of subject matter experts and apply their expertise, such as during resolution of URs and reviews of TPs.
  • Expert ability to provide technical decision-making at task level by making decisions that influence the direction of the deliverables and ensure LANL interests are appropriately addressed.
  • Expert ability to provide technical solutions to complex and/or unique problems, which require the regular use of ingenuity, creativity and independence.
  • You may be required to provide direction to technicians and support staff, as directed.

Engineering Technologist 2 Education/Experience: Position requires a bachelor's degree in engineering technology, Science, Math or related degree and 5 years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Engineering Technologist 3 Education/Experience: At this level, the position requires a Bachelor' Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 8 years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

Candidates selected for this position are most competitive when they also possess the following knowledge and skills:

  • Working knowledge of the Joint Nuclear Weapon Publication System (JNWPS) and the documents contained therein.
  • Working knowledge of weapon systems' mechanical and electrical interfaces, especially as these interfaces relate to limited life component exchange operations as performed by the US Air Force and/or the US Navy.
  • Experience interacting with NNSA National Laboratories and Production Agencies.
  • Experience interacting with and presenting to management at LANL, DOD, or other agencies, as well as to NNSA and DTRA.
  • Experience in establishing a training program and/or providing training to groups of civilians or DOD personnel.
  • Derivative Classifier (DC) experience.
  • Active Q clearance.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires ship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position."
