Multiphysics Model and Scale Bridging Postdoc

Los Alamos National Laboratory
Los Alamos, NM Full Time
POSTED ON 1/9/2025
AVAILABLE BEFORE 2/16/2025
What You Will Do

We are seeking a creative, hard-working postdoc to join our team in The Applied Mathematics and Plasma Physics (T-5) group within Los Alamos National Laboratory's Theoretical Division (T-Division). The successful applicant will contribute to a research program in multiphysics model and scale bridging. Potential topics include hybrid simulations coupling machine learning with numerical methods, multiscale discretizations, nonlocal closure modeling, and structure preservation. Experience in related fields of research is desired, and the successful applicant will contribute to algorithm and theory development, implementation, and the application of new methods to complex multiphysics problems. The position is for two years.

T-Division employs about 300 scientists, including many postdoctoral associates and graduate students, and provides a unique and engaging environment that fosters multi-disciplinary collaborations to support the laboratory's strategic basic research and national security missions. The Applied Mathematics and Plasma Physics (T-5) group within T-Division conducts research across a wide variety of topics including fusion science, space plasmas, numerical analysis, computational imaging, optimization, and the modeling of critical infrastructure (gas pipelines and electrical grids). These application areas are tied together by research in novel algorithms, numerical methods, and machine learning. The successful candidate will join a dynamic and interdisciplinary team that is working on problems of strategic national importance involving simulating high-dimensional, complex, multiscale phenomena. Many LANL projects address the nation's most challenging safety and security problems, and include extensive research related to high-performance computing. Access will be provided to state-of-the-art computing facilities at LANL.
