What You Will Do
The successful applicant will join the C-NR Countroom team, which operates a world-class analytical radiometric measurement facility that supports a variety of bioassay, environmental monitoring and nuclear security programs.
The primary job assignment will be to serve as the Subject Matter Expert for gamma-ray and beta decay counting capabilities and the development of improved radiometric measurement techniques. The selected candidate will help provide technical leadership across the C-NR Countroom team to operate gamma-ray detectors and gas-proportional beta decay counters in support of additional programs with both routine and prioritized deliverables and will help support Countroom automated data processing systems. Responsibilities include ensuring technically robust system performance, providing coordination within the Countroom team, and extensive collaboration with internal and external colleagues with expertise in analytical radiochemistry.
The success of the C-NR Countroom is directly related to national security objectives and requires all employees protect and maintain sensitive or classified information. This position is aligned for potential long-term career growth within the Nuclear and Radiochemistry Group, and the successful applicant will be expected to take on additional technical duties and an increased peer leadership role as they gain experience.This position will be filled at either the Scientist 2/3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Education/Experience for Scientist 3 level: Positions requires a Master's degree in Chemistry, Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or related field from an accredited college and university and 6 years of related experience, typically with post-doctoral research experience at a university or national lab or equivalent experience directly related to the occupation.

- Seek out R&D opportunities to advance radiometric measurement technology
- Collaborate with a broader set of C-NR and LANL staff to support R&D efforts that require radiometric measurements
- Maintain, calibrate, upgrade instrument systems, and perform routine quality control evaluations.
- Author and review procedure revisions
- Perform gamma and beta sample analysis for Countroom customers
Scientist 3 ($115,500 - $194,900)
Responsibilities will include (in addition to those listed above):
- Maintain a balanced portfolio that includes both leadership in operational measurement programs, and R&D projects to advance radiometric measurement technology
- Oversight of Countroom automated control and LIMS systems
- Review gamma spectra results for accuracy and quality and communicate results to customers
- Perform R&D in support of new and improved gamma and beta counting methods in support of Countroom program needs
- Pursue funding opportunities in support of Countroom R&D efforts
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Demonstrated gamma-ray spectrometry experience, including quality control measurements and evaluation
- Demonstrated experience with data validation, data reduction, and analytical report generation
- Demonstrated programming experience
- Proven ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment
- Proven ability to obtain a Q clearance, which normally requires US citizenship

- Proven ability to support a large-throughput radiometric analysis program
- Radiometric instrumentation R&D experience and accompanying peer-reviewed paper or report publication record

- Demonstrated expert experience with reviewing and authoring standard operating procedures and safety documents
- Demonstrated expert experience with automated gamma spectrometry data analysis
- Demonstrated experience developing specifications for product/system/equipment design and/or production processes in support of research
