What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the Research Tec 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills/experience of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Sigma Division focuses on manufacturing science emphasizing metallurgical processes and research in support of the experimental testing program at Los Alamos. Sigma division supports a broad customer base, both internal and external to LANL, with high quality prototype and limited production components. The work covers all materials from hydrogen to uranium on the periodic table. The Welding & Joining (W&J) team encompasses many types of welding and joining, including electron beam welding, laser welding, laser marking, laser cutting and ablation, manual and semi-automatic arc welding, brazing, and associated processing. The team also supports computational efforts, both internal to the team and in collaboration with other LANL experts, to investigate compensation, residual stresses, material composition, and microstructure development. The W&J team works with the other teams in Sigma and beyond to solve manufacturing challenges, provide metallurgical guidance, and lead the way in cutting edge welding and joining processing.
In this role you will perform hands on experimental research related to various manufacturing methods as outlined below. The work will enable you to utilize and grow your knowledge while working with cutting edge technology related to these processing areas.

Research Tec 2 ($53,700 - $82,500)
The successful candidate will:
- Assist with production-centric research and development activities in the following areas: arc welding including gas metal arc welding and gas tungsten arc welding, laser welding and related processing, electron beam welding, solid-state welding, and brazing
- Operate and maintain the equipment to support welding and joining research and perform related experimental documentation
- Work with a team to develop welding and joining solutions for internal and external customers
- Demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills, including working well within a team, working efficiently when alone, and relaying important information to management and team members
- Perform project related safety/security approvals and procurements
- Willingness to work with radioactive materials and other hazardous materials in a rigorous safety environment
In addition to the duties outlined above, the Research Tec 3 will be required to:
- Assist in the removal of legacy equipment as well as site preparation and installation of new equipment in the Sigma Complex
- Maintain supplies for the equipment in these areas
- Work with vendors to maintain, troubleshoot, and repair instrumentation and equipment in the facility
- Ensure that the work areas remain tidy

- Formal training or experience in welding, brazing, additive manufacturing, machining, or heat-treating using either computer or manual controlled equipment
- Hands-on experience maintaining electrical, pneumatic, vacuum, and/or hydraulic systems
- Experience reading and assembling parts using drawings and schematics
Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires an Associate's Degree and 3 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience with computer data acquisition systems on welding or fabrication equipment
- Proficient forklift and/or crane operator
- Experience working with radiological and hazardous materials
- Experience and/or familiarity working with vacuum systems and/or leak detection equipment
