SUMMARY:
Under direction to lead, oversee, and participate in the more complex and difficult duties of staff responsible for custodial duties on all shifts within a district school; to ensure all custodial assignments are completed in a timely and efficient manner; and to perform a variety of tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the full working lead level within the Custodian series. This class is distinguished from the Custodian II by the level of responsibility assumed and the complexity of duties assigned. Employees at this level assume full lead supervisory responsibility of all custodial crews assigned to the school and are required to be fully trained and knowledgeable on all District policies and procedures.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTION STATEMENTS
The following tasks are typical for positions in this classification. Any single position may not perform all of these tasks and/or may perform similar related tasks not listed here:
- Lead, plan, assign, train, review and participate in the work of staff responsible for performing custodial duties in assigned buildings and facilities; assume responsibility for work of custodial staff on all shifts.
- On a daily basis, meet with other shift lead and/or custodial workers to determine and evaluate shift assignment priorities; ensure Supervisor is informed and aware of all custodial operations.
- Oversee key distribution for custodial staff within assigned school; distribute, monitor and collect keys and other security equipment.
- Ensure doors and gates are locked when work is completed; inspect for vandalism and fire hazards; confer with security personnel as necessary; report emergencies to appropriate agencies and staff as required.
- Order, maintain and stock custodial supplies and inventory equipment; ensure adequate supply of custodial materials.
- Sweep, scrub, mop, wax and buff floors; vacuum and shampoo rugs and carpets; operate equipment such as floor buffers and vacuum cleaners.
- Clean and disinfect lavatories, toilets and other plumbing fixtures; wash windows; dust, wax and polish furniture and woodwork.
- Clean chalk boards; refill paper and other sanitary dispensers; empty, clean and sanitize waste containers.
- Operate custodial equipment, materials and supplies in a safe and effective manner.
- Oversee and participate in the preparation of rooms and facilities for special events, activities and meetings; move, arrange, deliver and set-up items and equipment.
- Deliver office and custodial supplies to various sites as necessary.
- Remove ice and snow from school grounds and parking lots.
- Mix a variety of cleaning disinfectants.
- Follow and ensure all safety rules and procedures are followed by custodial staff.
- Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of: Operations, services and activities of a comprehensive custodial program.
Principles and practices of lead supervision and training. Operational characteristics of cleaning equipment and materials. Modern institutional cleaning methods, materials, safe work practices and equipment. Methods and techniques of cleaning and preserving floors, furniture, walls and fixtures. Proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies.
Inventory and record-keeping techniques. Health and safety regulations.
Ability to: Lead, organize and review the work of custodial staff. Independently perform the most difficult custodial duties. Prioritize custodial assignments. Ensure all custodial and related maintenance requirements are assigned and completed. Interpret, explain and enforce department policies and procedures. Use cleaning materials, equipment and methods according to pre-determined standards. Apply knowledge of the schedules, procedures and operation of equipment and supplies used in custodial work. Operate an assigned vehicle to make deliveries. Meet schedules and time lines. Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Able to lift 80 Lbs Min.
Education and Experience Guidelines: Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
Experience: Four years increasingly responsible custodial experience.
License or Certificate: Possession of a valid New Mexico driver’s license.

Other Factors: Incumbents may be required to work extended hours including evenings and weekends. Incumbents may be required to travel from site to site in the performance of duties.
$19.50 Hourly rate
1.00 FTE- 8 hour shift, 40 hour week
249 work contract days- July 01 to June 30
9 paid Holidays, and 11 non contract work days
