What are the responsibilities and job description for the FY24 - Cinema Instructor position at Los Angeles Community College District?

In accordance with its mission as a community college, instruction at LAVC focuses on creating pathways for certificates, degrees, and transfer. Faculty members are expected to create a learning-centered environment that supports students in fulfilling their educational goals. All instructors are required to teach fifteen hours per week. Evening, online, and/or split assignments may be included in this assignment, as well as dual enrollment assignments, which are college classes taught to high school students. This is a ten (10) month appointment; however, additional summer and winter assignments may be available.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Teaching the regular load of 15 hours per week of Cinema and/or Media Arts courses and holding regular office hours
  • Planning, developing, and implementing course curricula, as well as updating course materials and the course outlines of record
  • Contributing to the development and assessment of student learning outcomes
  • Completing and submitting required documents in a timely manner
  • Participating in mandated projects, such as Program Review
  • Participating in department and campus committees and activities
  • Performing other academic duties and responsibilities as assigned by the department chairperson.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in Film/Cinema and Media Studies, Film, Television, and Media Studies, Drama/Theater, Mass Communication; OR
  • Bachelor’s degree in any of the above AND Master’s degree in Visual Studies, Media Studies, English, or Communication; OR the equivalent
  • AND a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

A medical certificate indicating fitness to instruct or associate with students is required at the applicant's expense after selection from an eligible list and prior to employment.

Pursuant to LACCD Board of Trustee's Policy 2900, all students and employees must be fully vaccinated and complete a baseline test or have an approved exemption. LACCD employees are required to provide their vaccination status in compliance with the LACCD Board of Trustees’ policy. Newly hired employees will be required to provide their vaccination status prior to starting a position or, at the latest, by their position start date.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least two years of experience teaching Media Arts/Cinema production
  • At least two years of production and post-production experience with narrative and documentary filmmaking
  • At least two years of experience working at established entertainment production companies, studios, and/or postproduction facilities
  • Demonstrates ability to teach postproduction courses from beginning to advanced skill levels covering editing, color grading, file-based workflows, visual effects, motion-capture, 3D and motion graphics
  • Community college teaching experience
  • Mastery and experience, and/or certification in Adobe Premiere Pro, Photoshop, After Effects as well as DaVinci Resolve, Maya, and Unreal Engine
  • Knowledge and experience of audio production and postproduction, including ProTools and Adobe Audition
  • Familiarity with trends in teaching methodologies for Cinema/Media Arts production and postproduction
  • Experience in developing curriculum for Cinema/Media Arts production and postproduction courses
  • Experience in using technology in enhancing and teaching Cinema/Media Arts production and postproduction courses
  • Experience in teaching hybrid / online courses
  • Success at initiating, executing and following-up of projects in a timely manner
  • Commitment to a career in a diverse, student-centered department and college
  • Ability to create a safe and welcoming environment for all students, including those with diverse sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions
  • Experience with best practices in tutoring and teaching related to student success and equity
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with various academic departments and service areas at the college
  • Knowledge of equity-centered educational research on best practices to support the success of Latinx, Black, Indigenous, and other students of color
  • Experience with the assessment of student learning (e.g., Student Learning Outcomes)
  • Interest in and willingness to participate in college and department committees and activities and a commitment to execute extracurricular responsibilities within the department and college.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

The current starting range is from $66,220 to $103,100 for the ten (10) month academic year depending on education and experience. The doctorate differential is $4180 per academic year.
