Job Title: GROUNDSKEEPER/GARDENER II
Job Summary
Maintain, repair, and operate a variety of gardening and groundskeeping equipment; assist with installation and repair of sprinkler systems; perform a variety of grounds maintenance, landscaping, and gardening work at assigned site; perform related duties as assigned.
Responsible To and Evaluated By: Assistant Superintendent of Business & Support Services, or designee.
Class Characteristics
This single incumbent classification performs duties primarily involved in the maintenance and repair of a variety of gardening and groundskeeping equipment. Incumbents also perform gardening and groundskeeping duties which typically require a higher level of knowledge and skill than those of Groundskeeper/Gardener I positions.
Examples of Duties
- Maintain, repair, and operate a variety of gardening and groundskeeping equipment, including hand and power mowers, hedgers, rototillers, sweepers, sprayers, chippers, and related equipment; sharpen mower blades, repair small motors and forklifts; adjust mower and tractor attachments
- Order parts and materials for gardening and groundskeeping repairs
- Assist in installation, maintenance and repair of sprinkler systems, including repair of electric and hydraulic controllers and valves
- Plant, cultivate, fertilize, prune, shape, trim, water, and spray trees, shrubs, hedges, and annual/perennial plants; cultivate soil, remove weeds, undergrowth and debris
- Cultivate, seed or sod, and fertilize, water, mow, and trim lawns
- Clean and maintain drainage areas; clean gutters and roofs
- Mix and apply herbicides and pesticides to grounds, fields, trees and garden areas for pest infestation and weed control
- Load and haul top soil, fir bark, granite, and sand
- May sweep or wash down walks and driveways, removing paper, rubbish, and other debris
- Patch asphalt, pour cement, resurface blacktop and repair fences
- Prepare work completion, hazard, incident or other reports as required
- Keep abreast of new or changing landscaping and gardening techniques
- Perform related duties and responsibilities as required
Employment Standards

Training and Experience: Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities
would be:
Training: Equivalent to high school graduation.
Experience: Two years of experience in gardening, landscaping or general laboring work.
Knowledge of: Use and care of groundskeeping and gardening tools and equipment; installation, repair and operation of irrigation sprinkler systems; methods and materials used in planting, cultivating, and caring for lawns, trees, shrubs, hedges, and annual/perennial plants, including use of pesticides and herbicides; common plant diseases and pests, and methods and materials used in their control.
Ability to: Maintain, repair, and operate gardening tools and equipment, including small motors and more complex equipment; read and interpret landscape plans and sketches; understand and follow oral and written instructions; work effectively and safely around children; exercise good judgment in the performance of assigned duties; establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of duties.
Physical Requirements: Vision sufficient to read labels on chemicals; hearing sufficient to hear normal conversation and to hear sounds from machines and equipment; speech sufficient to speak in an understandable voice; stamina sufficient to stand for long periods of times and walk extensively around the campus; mobility sufficient to stoop, bend, and crawl; manual dexterity sufficient to operate and hand power tools; physical strength sufficient to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
Licenses and Certificates: Possession of a valid California Driver’s License and a driving record which meets the requirements of the District’s insurance carrier. Possession of a Standard First Aid and CPR Certificate within 90 days of employment. May be required to obtain a standard Fork Lift Operator’s License within 90 days of employment.
