Under general supervision, the Senior Special Programs Assistant - Bilingual Spanish provides specialized assistance, outreach, information and training to children, school aged youth, young adults, parents, community members, school district staff, private nonprofit agency staff, or business representatives; compiles program related data and prepares reports and other written materials.
The Well Qualified Candidate Will Possess the Following
Knowledge:
- Policies, rules, procedures and practices of the assigned program
- Relevant provisions of the California Education Code and applicable laws, codes, and regulations that apply to Head Start/Early Head Start and Early Learning programs
- Telephone techniques and etiquette
- Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary
- Basic Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and Outlook
- Record-keeping, input, and data retrieval procedures for data management systems, content management systems, and manual filing systems

- Legal & Regulatory Navigation – Understanding, interpreting, and ensuring compliance with laws and regulations

Education: Graduation from high school or equivalent.
Experience: Three years of experience providing community outreach, direct assistance, training or facilitating social service related classes, programs or workshops to children, school-aged youth, or young adults and their families or two years as a Special Programs Assistant.
Equivalency Provision: An Associate of Arts Degree, or equivalent college units (60 semester units or 90 quarterly units), in one of the social sciences such as sociology, psychology, humanities or other fields closely related to the job requirements of this classification from an institution of higher learning recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation may substitute for two years of required experience. Foreign degrees and credit units require translation and equivalency established by an agency recognized by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
Additional Requirements: Positions in this classification require passing a test of bilingual proficiency in oral and written Spanish and translating from English to Spanish and from Spanish to English. A valid California driver’s license and availability of private transportation or ability to provide transportation between job sites may be required.
Hybrid remote schedules may be available. To ensure the health and safety of its staff, LACOE may require employees to provide evidence of full vaccination against COVID-19.
Selection Process
Candidates who meet the minimum requirements above will be invited to participate in an examination that may consist of a Spanish multiple-choice written examination and English/Spanish written/oral translation examinations, data entry and MS Office (MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint) computer examinations, and a structured interview.

Candidates who pass all exam parts are ranked according to overall exam score and placed on an eligibility (hiring) list. Vacant positions are filled from the top three ranks. Eligibility lasts for 12 months; however, additional recruitment may occur under a separate bulletin with additional candidates being merged onto the eligibility list. Some positions that involve public contact may require bilingual proficiency for which selective certification may apply (Education Code 45277.5). In addition, the eligibility list resulting from this examination may be used to fill vacancies in related job classifications for which no eligibility list exists (Education Code 45272). Veterans' Credit may be awarded for entry jobs.
