Job Description / Essential Elements:
DEFINITION: Under the direction of the Site Principal, clean and maintain an assigned school facility, group of buildings, or office space in a clean, orderly, and secure manner. Under the direction of the Director of Business Operations, operate a school bus or transportation vehicle over designated routes within an established time schedule to transport students to and from school and on special events trips.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Sweep, mop, strip, wax, and seal floors; vacuum rugs and carpets.
• Dust, wash, and polish furniture and woodwork.
• Empty and clean waste receptacles, including trash barrels.
• Clean restrooms, locker room, and shower area.
• Wash windows and walls and clean white boards.
• Move and arrange furniture and equipment in preparing multipurpose rooms or classrooms for special events or meetings.
• Clean window coverings, such as drapes and blinds.
• Pick up paper and debris from school grounds, walk areas, and the area adjacent to the school facilities; sweep concrete surfaces adjacent to the school buildings.
• Perform emergency cleanup service resulting from breakage, vandalism, spilling, and illness.
• Perform minimal yard work including pulling weeds in flower beds and raking leaves.
• Lock and unlock gates and doors, and set security systems.
• Perform minor maintenance work as assigned.
• Transport students to and from school, athletic events and field trips; load and unload students safely at designated stops.
• Maintain the bus in a clean and orderly condition; inspect and report mechanical defects or malfunctions; sweep, clean and refuel buses.
• Maintain appropriate student behavior on bus; contact others concerning transportation problems and concerns.
• Complete routine daily transportation activity record, including number of students transported, mileage, type of trip, and standby time.
• Assist children with special needs as assigned; lift and carry children, wheel chairs and medical equipment.
• Assist in general bus maintenance activities as assigned.
• Perform related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Knowledge and skills of:
• safe driving practices and techniques;
• basic first aid procedures and methods;
• provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code and Title XIII applicable to the operation of vehicles in the transportation of school children;
• safety and maintenance requirements of bus equipment;

• drive a school bus along a designated route safely and efficiently;
• maintain appropriate student behavior on a school bus or other transportation equipment;

• present a positive image of Golden Valley Unified School District.
Education and Experience:
Any combination equivalent to: successful completion of bus driver training, graduation from high school, and one year of experience working effectively with school age students.
Licenses and Certificates:
Valid California Class B driver’s license; California Medical Certificate; California Special Driver’s Certificate for Type I school bus, and valid CPR and first aid card. Bus driver incumbents are required to maintain a sufficient number of training hours as prescribed by law.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Environment:
Indoor and outdoor work environment; seasonal heat and cold or adverse weather conditions, regular exposure to fumes, dust, and odors; driving in various road and weather conditions; noise.
Physical Abilities:
Lifting, carrying, pushing, and moving heavy furniture and equipment; climb stairs and ramps; walking or standing for extended periods of time; manual dexterity of hand and fingers to operate equipment and break up fights; bending at the waist; reaching overhead and horizontally; hearing and speaking to exchange information; running; and seeing to monitor student activities.
Hazards:
Contact with cleaning agents and chemicals; traffic hazards when stopping traffic and escorting students across streets.
