ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
To perform professional level architectural work and coordinate architectural projects.
JOB SUMMARY:
- Prepare or coordinate the preparation of architectural design work, including programming; plan layouts, schematic, preliminary, and complete drawings; specifications and cost estimates
- Review architectural design work for effectiveness, completeness, and adherence to standards, codes, and Districts' standards
- Coach, train, and mentor colleagues on technical issues related to architectural design work
- Administer Districts' projects of moderate to high complexity, including coordination of other design disciplines, development of scope, schedule, and budget, and monitoring progress
- Review progress of assigned projects to ensure work is on schedule and within budget
- Prepare, design, produce and render graphic presentations, including photo realistic 3D models and video animation and presentation graphics
- Research and select construction materials required for architectural design work, including the development of master specifications
- Review preliminary and final plans and specifications produced by the Structural, Architectural and Geotechnical Design Section to determine compliance with program requirements, Districts' standards, and local, state, and federal regulations
- Prepare and coordinate the development of detailed studies, evaluations, reports, and assessments
- Provide design support during construction, including shop drawing review, preparation of clarifications or revisions, and site visits
- Maintain technical resources and catalogs of current architectural products, technologies, building regulations, and public safety standards
- Coordinate the work of professional consultants, including preparation of Requests for Proposals, evaluation and selection of professional consultants, negotiation on behalf of the Districts, tracking performance, and auditing work for compliance
- A valid California Class C driver license
- A bachelor's degree in architecture from an accredited and recognized college or university
- Possession of a Certificate of Registration as an Architect with the California Architects Board
- Option 1: Six (6) years of professional architectural experience subsequent to earning a bachelor's degree in architecture
- Option 2: A master's degree in architecture from an accredited and recognized college or university AND three (3) years of professional architecture experience
Desirable Qualifications:
In addition to the minimum qualifications stated above, the ideal candidate would also possess:
- A bachelor's and/or master's degree from an accredited and recognized college or university in engineering or a related science
- Possession of a Certificate of Registration as a Professional Engineer with the California Board of Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists.
- Principles of architectural design and standards of practice within the field of architecture
- Green building design and sustainability practices
- Architectural and building materials
- Construction management principles
- Various construction techniques and their practical applications
- Principles of budgeting, including cost estimation and management
- Federal, state, and local laws related to architectural design and construction
- Major drafting and modeling software systems
- Public agencies’ requirements and jurisdiction over project areas such as those related to the county, city, fire department, and fire marshal
- Relationship of architectural design to the other engineering features of buildings, including cost and operation comparisons; and pertinent provisions of professional contracts
- Design, coordinate and administer complex architectural projects
- Create work products that are functional, intuitive, and aesthetically pleasing
- Plan, organize and monitor the effectiveness of the work of consultants and vendors
- Ensure that projects are on-time, on-budget, and achieve their objectives
- Reach mutually satisfying agreements and compromises
- Negotiate on behalf of the districts
- Evaluate information, propositions and claims in an analytical and logical manner
- Choose optimal courses of action in a timely manner; understand, interpret and ensure compliance with laws and regulations
- Show vigilance and care in identifying and addressing health risks and safety hazards
- Engage effectively in dialogue and communicate effectively in writing
- Make persuasive oral presentations to groups
- Establish rapport and maintain mutually productive working relationships
- All applications will be reviewed to determine if the conditions and qualifications for testing are met.
- The selection process will consist of an interview weighted at 100% and will be the same for all qualified applicants.
- Candidates must receive a qualifying score on each selection component to move forward in the selection process.
- The interviews for the first round of qualified applicants are tentatively scheduled to begin the week of February 24.
