The Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts are seeking motivated individuals to join the Landfill Engineering Group within the Solid Waste Department’s Operations and Engineering Section. Current and future opportunities are available at several landfill sites, with the immediate vacancy located at the Calabasas Landfill. These positions offer a unique opportunity to support critical environmental operations by conducting field sampling, gas system monitoring, data analysis, and technical reporting. Work is performed primarily outdoors in a dynamic setting and contributes to landfill gas control, environmental compliance, and operational efficiency. Depending on the level, incumbents may enter the field to learn basic engineering techniques (Level I), apply technical knowledge to a variety of assignments (Level II), or take on progressively responsible tasks requiring sound judgment and independent problem-solving (Level III). The ideal candidate will have a scientific background—particularly in engineering, math, or environmental sciences—and a strong interest in hands-on environmental fieldwork.
NOTE: The list of eligible candidates resulting from this recruitment may be used to fill future vacancies that may occur at the Calabasas Landfill, Scholl Canyon Landfill, Puente Hills Landfill, Palos Verdes Landfill, or Spadra Landfill.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
To perform a variety of increasingly more difficult para-professional engineering duties, in support of engineering programs including landfill, gas or hazardous waste checking; wastewater system; industrial waste monitoring; health and safety; technical services; or other technical assignments.

Under the direction of a Supervising Engineering Technician or higher classification, the incumbent will:
- Conduct a variety of field sampling, testing, data gathering, data recording, calculations, or office assignments providing technical support using computer applications
- Collect, compile, calculate, and present data
- Operate equipment by using protocol of instrumentation used in data or sample collection
- Maintain and calibrate sampling equipment based on established protocol
- Perform tests to ensure the working order of gas recovery systems
- Troubleshoot problems identified from irregular data or equipment failures
- Prepare reports and evaluate data
This position may be filled at any level:
- ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN I is the entry-level class in which incumbents receive work which provides an opportunity to learn the terminology, processes, and equipment of para-professional field engineering. The tasks assigned are less difficult and more routine than those of the Engineering Technician II or III.
- ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN II is the intermediate level class in which incumbents perform a variety of moderately difficult para-professional engineering work requiring the application of general technical knowledge.
- ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN III is the journey level class in which incumbents perform tasks requiring significant judgment, thorough knowledge and progressively responsible experience. Incumbents occasionally train or provide technical and functional direction to one or more technicians.
- A valid California Class B or C driver's license depending on the type of Districts' vehicle driven in the specific assignment
- Any combination of college or work experience in environmental science, physics, engineering, biology, or related scientific area, which provides the knowledge and abilities listed; or related scientific area is desirable
- One (1) year of experience as an Engineering Technician I -OR- A Bachelor of Science degree in a directly related major
- One (1) year of experience at or above Engineering Technician II
- A bachelor's degree in math, engineering or scientific field
- Experience with gas system or water quality monitoring
- Basic chemistry of industrial waste, hazardous waste, methane gas, water treatment, flow monitoring, or corrosion control
- Methods of preparing and interpreting maps, charts, graphs, and technical reports
- Engineering and scientific nomenclature
- Sampling procedures and measurement techniques for liquids and gases
- Terminology and procedures related to flow measurement and control, and material recovery operations
- Math calculations
- Applicable safety practices and procedures
- Hazardous waste materials
- Methods of interpreting and presenting technical data verbally and in reports
- Sample preservation techniques
- Test samples and collect data
- Locate monitoring stations
- Perform sampling and installation procedures
- Evaluate data
- Use computer software applications
- Perform math calculations
- Work in confined spaces
- Monitor equipment, gas meter and wells
- Communicate clearly both orally and in writing
- Prepare routine correspondence and data reports
This position may require the incumbent to be able to use respiratory equipment and pass an annual pulmonary function test.

- The selection process will consist of a written exam which will be pass/fail and an interview weighted at 100%.
- Candidates must receive a qualifying score on each selection component to move forward in the selection process.
- The written exam is tentatively scheduled for Monday, May 12.
- The interviews will tentatively take place during the week of May 19.

Salary : $5,466 - $8,669
