Position Description

This recruitment is intended only for current 3L students.

All selected applicants will begin as part of a cohort. The anticipated beginning of employment for the next cohort of selected 3L applicants is September 2, 2025.

Los Angeles Superior Court is the largest unified trial court in the United States. Its 580 judges and commissioners work in one of the 36 facilities within the Court's 12 judicial districts and are supported by more than 4,800 full-time Court employees. The Court has an annual budget of more than $1 billion. ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

Law Clerks conduct legal research, analyze motions and other matters on calendar to expedite court calendars, prepare written recommendations there on, and perform related duties as assigned.

Special Conditions of Employment : Law clerks may be employed for a limited term of up to 30 months, with formal performance appraisals given at the 6 month and 18-month anniversary. Law Clerks may not practice law, receive legal fees, and / or represent a party as counsel during their employment by the Court as Law Clerks. Other outside employment must be approved in advance. Employment is "at will."

MINIMUM REQUIRMENTS

To qualify, you must meet the following requirements at the time of application :

  • LAW CLERK (NON-BAR, PRE-GRADUATION) : Current enrollment in a Juris Doctor program at an accredited school of law, in good standing, and within six months of graduation (if selected, offer will be contingent upon proof of both graduation and eligibility to take the California Bar Examination).

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to conduct legal research independently, apply the law to the facts and reach a sound, well-supported conclusion about the motion or other matter
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with judicial officers and others in the workplace
  • Ability to manage competing priorities effectively and meet deadlines

  • 2 writing samples demonstrating your analytical ability (i.e. drafted pleading, legal publication, legal writing class assignment, etc.; an introductory paragraph explaining the nature of the writing sample is encouraged, i.e., indicating the purpose for which it was written, how much is your own original work, if it is an excerpt from a larger work, etc.)

  • Law School Diploma or letter from your law school's Registrar's Office verifying that a degree has been conferred

  • Proof of eligibility to take the California Bar Examination

    Choices Benefit Plan

    Benefits may be purchased using a tax-free monthly benefits allowance between $1,099.20 and $2,369.10 for the 2023 plan year (based on number enrolled in medical coverage). If the monthly cost of the benefits selected is less than the monthly allowance, the employee receives the difference as additional taxable pay, up to a maximum of $244.00.     The Choices plan includes a robust range of insurance options, including medical, dental, disability, life, and AD&D insurance.

    Flexible Spending Accounts

    Employees may contribute up to $237 per month into a tax-free Health Care Spending Account and up to $400 per month tax-free into a Dependent Care Spending Account. The Court contributes up to $375 per month to the Dependent Care Spending Account.

    Leave Benefits

    Vacation - All permanent and other designated categories of employees are eligible to earn paid vacation based on years of service. Vacation is based on continuous service and credited at the completion of each consecutive six-month period of employment.

    Sick leave - Depending on the length of service and employment categories, up to one day of full pay per month of service is accrued monthly for qualifying service.

    Holidays - 14 days per year.

  • Optional tax-deferred supplemental retirement plan that includes a County match of up to 4% of employee's salary.
  • Retirement Pension Plan administered by the Los Angeles County Employees Retirement Association (LACERA).

    If the candidate is a "new member" of the County's defined benefit plan (LACERA) on or after January 1, 2013, that person's pension will be limited under the Public Employees' Pension Reform Act (PEPRA). For these purposes, a "new member" is someone who first becomes a member of LACERA on or after January 1, 2013 - that is, someone first employed by the County on or after December 1, 2012 - unless she or he established reciprocity with another public retirement system in which she or he was a member before January 1, 2013.     Tuition Reimbursement - The Tuition Reimbursement Program provides eligible employees with tuition assistance (maximum $2000 per fiscal year) for courses toward a degree program at an accredited college and / or university. The program is intended to support the ongoing development of a highly effective workforce at the Court.
