JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
A Tractor Mower Operator:
- Operates, adjusts, and performs minor maintenance on a gasoline or diesel powered tractor with retractable mower reels to travel to school sites on public streets and mow lawn and sports turf areas.
- Uses mower attachments to aerate, seed, and fertilize lawn and turf areas.
- Intermittently provides work direction to gardening crews engaged in garden maintenance and turf and lawn care activities, such as fertilizing, aerating, weeding, reseeding, landscaping and removal of weeds and rubbish as needed.
- Report on and assists in reviewing, evaluating, and maintaining new and improved gardening equipment, materials, and supplies.
- May operate, adjust, and perform minor maintenance on power mowers, tractor attachments, and other power gardening equipment.
- May instruct and train District personnel in the operation of tractor mowers.
- May perform duties related to landscape and field reconditioning functions during periods of inclement weather.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
PROMOTIONAL STATUS IS REQUIRED. You must be a current or retired employee of LAUSD with 130 paid days in regular status in the Classified Service or permanent status in the Certificated Service or have been laid-off within the past 39 months from a regular, permanent LAUSD position in which you passed probation. Laid-off employees' eligibility as a promotional candidate expires at the end of their 39 month period; as such, laid-off employees applying for promotional career opportunities may not be eligible to complete the assessment process or may be removed from the employment eligibility list once their eligibility as a promotional candidate expires.
EDUCATION:
Graduation from high school or equivalent evidence of educational proficiency at the high school level. Successful completion of courses in supervision, mechanics and turf grass is preferable.
EXPERIENCE:
Two years of experience in maintenance gardening including sports turf maintenance and the operation and servicing of power gardening equipment.
SPECIAL:
A valid California Driver License.
Use of an automobile.
SPECIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTT:
Sufficient strength to safely lift and move tools, equipment, and materials incidental to the work.
Freedom from allergies caused by common plants which might interfere with work assignments.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
An ideal candidate for the Tractor Mower Operator position will possess the knowledge of:
- The variety of grasses commonly used in turf and lawns in the Los Angeles area
- Methods, materials, and tools used to tend and maintain turfs and lawns
- Safety practices related to the operation of a tractor mower and other power gardening equipment
Further, the ideal candidate will also possess the ability to:
- Operate and make minor repairs to gasoline or diesel-powered tractor mowers, tractor attachments and other power gardening equipment
- Use proper types and proportions of fertilizers, soil amendments in the care of turfs and lawns
- Recognize and diagnose problems in the condition of turf and lawns
- Work within restrictive deadlines
- Provide work direction effectively
- Work effectively with District personnel
