SUMMARY: The Coach assists the Head Coach in various aspects of the Competitive Basketball Program including training, and coaching team members. The Coach is required to abide by rules/regulations set by LGS Recreation as well as the rules/regulations set by participating Agencies/Entities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Includes the following:
- Manages and supervises athletic activities, contests, and practice sessions, to promote individual growth in athletic skills, teamwork, discipline, respect, and good sportsmanship.
- Follows Agency policies, site procedures, and Coaches Code of Ethics.
- Provides training in conduct, ethics, sportsmanship for all participants.
- Supervises the team before, during, and after practices, games, and sporting events.
- Verifies that the Head Coach has cleared each team member before allowing them to practice/play.
- Adheres to all State, Agency, league policies.
- Uses a variety of instructional techniques and media to meet the needs and improve the abilities of players/coaches in competitive basketball.
- Assists the Head Coach in planning and instilling instructional goals and objectives to ensure the overall development of players/coaches.
- Evaluates players athletic abilities initially and on a regular basis using performance criteria developed by the Head Coach.
- Follows schedule for regular practices to provide both individual and team development.
- Attends a preseason meeting with all players and parents before the first official competition.
- Assesses players’ skills and assigns team positions.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES, CONT.
- Determines game strategy based on the team’s capabilities.
- Takes all necessary precautions to protect players, equipment, and facilities, including protecting students from hazing/bullying.
- Maintains and secures all basketball equipment and uniforms and provides end of season inventory list to Head Coach.
- Oversees process of cleaning, repairing, and storing all athletic equipment.
- Assists Head Coach with seasonal tryouts.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE OF:
- Principles and practices of effective coaching techniques and skills

- Learn, monitor, and enforce relevant laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures

- Use English effectively to communicate in person, over the telephone, and in writing
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
At least one year experience coaching middle and/or high school basketball.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Must have current certificates in CPR, First Aid, NFHS Coaching, Cardiac Arrest, and Concussion at time of hire.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to abide by rules/regulations for competitive play.
